Bathroom towel holder install

Installing a towel holder in an RV can be a problem due to lack of proper support. As Crossroads owners we have the extremely nice benefit of a true 16" on center stud wall construction. Once we find any stud we can just measure multiples of 16" to find one at the desired location. An easy way to find a stud is to locate a wallboard seam as shown in the photo. The seam should always be right on top of a wall stud. The tape coveringis very well color matched so you have to look kinda close.In my case I measured 32" towards the sink. Then to make sure there is a stud there I drilled a hole with the smallest drill bit I had. If it pushed right thru move a little left or right and try again. Unless you are way off the holes will be covered with the towel holder anyway. Since the studs are aluminum use only enough force to lightly snug the screws against the wall because they can easily strip out. I am in no way implying I'm an RV technician or suggesting some kind of a voice of authority. This worked for me.

If you have a stud finder it will also find the studs in the trailer. Good job!

Finding a seam to locate a wall stud was actually my wifes idea. I have two stud locators and if you look real close you can see two drill holes to the right of the towel holder....could not find the stud. One of the stud locators is supposed to find metal studs but maybe it's my klutz skills but didn't work for me.

What a hassle it is, I can't use a stud finder, As soon as I get close to one of these things it always goes off lol

Never being too old to learn.....thought the stud finder used magnetism to find nails in the studs......aluminum is not magnetic, so ?????

They now have stud finders that locate by sound for that very reason. They also tell if you are close to electric lines, now that is a nice feature!

'saw your June 09 post in the Crossroads mod forum about your towel holder installation - 'looks likea tensionshower curtain rod.

We thought about doing that but were concerned thatthe pressure on the walls would bend the walls.

How has the solution worked out for you in the long run?

I have noticed that the studs were not 16" o.c. on my slide out side walls.
