Can I add a trailer hitch to my trailer?

I've seen some rigs with a trailer receiver set up on the rear of a TT. Has anyone done it on a Hill Country 32RL or the like? I'm wanting (need it I say!) to pull my 700 # scooter on a trailer behind my TT. Weight on the tow vehicle is not a problem...weight on the TT frame is my concern.

Thanks,

Ron

I just found the "Search thread" tool and found my answer. First, there is an overall length issue to be aware of (65ft in Tx) and the receiver must be attached to the frame, and the TT "feet" might be in the way. Sorry for interrupting!

My understanding is that the first towed trailer must be a fifth wheel, not a goose neck or a bumper pull. Goose necks and bumper pulls both require safety chains and you can't have safety chains on both trailers.

Some brands and even some Crossroads models come equipped from the factory with receivers. But you will have a lot more work to do with your Hill Country. Anything you do to the frame w/o Crossroads and Lippert approval will void your warranty. My buddy needed a receiver hitch installed on his Cruiser a few yrs ago, so while a Lippert mobile welder was doing warranty work on it, he paid to have the work done at the same time, that way it didn't impact the warranty. Lippert has a number of plants around the country since they build frames for other trailers besides RVs and there may be one near you. I suggest you contact them, they may even send you to approved third party welder near by.

Depending on your state you will probably need to upgrade your license to Class A. Some states don't recognize the license and don't allow doubles. I read recently about someone who had visited Canada from the US. They drove up through Michigan (I think) and came back through New York. New York doesn't allow doubles towing and they were in a real bind by the time they got pulled over.

His signature says Texas, so as long as it's for personal use he does not need a Class A drivers license, not sure about the triple towing with 2 bumper hitch trailers, don't think it's legal, 5th wheel & trailer possibly.

Michigan residents need an rv double endorsement on their drivers license. similar to having cycle or chauffeurs endorsement. I believe the length in Michigan is 65 feet overall.

Total length vary from state to state mainly between 60 and 65 ft max. A lot or maybe most states require the second trailer behind a 5th wheel only

Looking at the towing guide that mark5w highlighted, it seems that only 4 states require the first trailer to be a fiver, others don't. But for a 700 lb scooter, a good option might be the Swivel Wheel single wheel trailer. It doesn't pivot, but uses the swivel wheel instead so it tracks the front trailer and can be backed up w/o disconnecting.
