Fifth wheel stairs
DW is wanting me to replace the carpeted stairs with hardwood. If I do it, I plan to add a vacuum port in the bottom riser to sweep dust into.
Anyone done this before? Any tips?

My inlaws full time in their 5th wheel and run different local camp grounds. He built a set of stairs that includes a rail to hold on to. It breaks down quickly so he can pull the trailer out and leave the stairs or to put them in the bed of his truck.
I assume you full time or do you have to move a lot? Might be better off replacing the existing with metal steps that fold up and allow a shorter step height.

I just shaped, finished, and screwed some cherry wood slats I had to each step right over the carpet. It looks nice, keeps the carpet from developing a path and was quick and easy. You can still vacuum the carpet around the slats. Any wood flooring could be used too. If I had wanted to spend the time I could have glued them together to make one large surface surrounded by carpet on each step but I like the slat look and think it provides a better foot grip.
Also, it looked to me like a major job to neatly get the carpet up.

We have a 2013 CR STR 5th wheel. Last year we were able to locate a sheet of linoleum from Cross Roads that matched the main floor linoleum in the coach. We replaced the carpet on the stairs up to the front bedroom and bathroom with the linoleum. After just a few years of use, the carpet looked worn and was starting to go. It is much easier maintenance with the linoleum and it all matches.

No,it was not hard to do. I used card board to create a template of each step and riser. Then using linoleum adhesive, applied it to each step and glued the pieces in place. I then found cove molding cover the ends and step face. It took a couple of hours to do the job.

You roll the linoleum on the nose of the tread?

No, I didn't role the linoleum over the edge. I used a metal stair tread piece to cover the edge so it wouldn't wear. My trailer is in storage. I'll run over this weekend and take a couple of pictures and post them so you can see how it did it.

Our treads have a radius. I'm gonna look at Pergo. Think I could straighten the radius and add nose.

Hey a second possibility could be a runner
I used a runner and locked it down with spring loaded curtain rods. I have vinyl at the top step so just used carpet tape two sided. Works great and allows for change. The DW loves that

Here is what my 5th wheel steps looked like after we pulled the carpet on the stairs and replaced the steps and risers with the OEM linoleum.
