Installed a Battery Disconnect

Installed a battery disconnect this weekend. Not sure why a battery disconnect isn't standard on all RVs. After draining our battery several times wile not in use, and getting tired of manually disconnecting battery every time, I installed my own.

After talking to the parts man at my dealership about the options, he recommended a battery disconnect that is coming standard on keystone RV. He ordered it for me, $30 and to me is way better than any aftermarket disconnects they had in stock. So far I'm very pleased.

Anyone else have a disconnect they recommend? Or a homemade version they want to share.

I also got tired of a dead battery. Bought a all weather / marine disconnect.

Harley why do you use two batteries? Do you dry camp a lot or just like to have a back up? Nice install.

Daddyo, nice install, what is that mounted to?

Installed the same one. Absolutely a necessity.

It is bolted to the L iron frame that the battery box sits in. I bent a plate of sheet metal into an L shape, rounded the top and sprayed canned it black. Secured it with two pre drilled holes with self tapping screws.

Well the first battery came with the trailer ,a #27 , and the 2nd was one i just bought last year , an agm. . Probably only need 2 batts a couple times , but the option is there. .. This summer we have elec for the full 3 weeks and will leave 1 batt home (for weight) . Last summer we did a 6 week trip and only had elec for 4 nights . Was nice to have the back-up.

I bought a $5 black switch from O'Reillys and the shortest pre-made battery cable I could find (about 6") and you can guess the rest. Pretty simple hooked it up to the positive side.

Really just asking cause I don't know for sure but I thought the disconnect was suppose to be on the negative side.

Just a simple circuit, as long as you break one you will be fine. If you were doing the battery disconnect right at the terminal of the battery then I would do the negative for sure. Or if you were running a sanctioned race car, then you would need to break the positive. But, in this case, any one is fine.

It's been a while since I installed it. I'll have to go look. It's tucked around a corner in the front storage area so I just reach in and turn the key. I'll let you know. It works though.

I did attach it to the Pos side. Apparently it cost $18 now. I've had mine a while and even transferred it to the Cruiser when we downsized.

Tre -What guage of wire did you use? I am guessing 8 or 10. Also is that switch weather proof or doesn't it matter. I would like to copy your install.
