LED awning light strip help

I think I have seen a thread in here I believe that had a "how to" on wiring the LED strip into the porch light. I can't seem to find the correct one. Can someone help on this please? Is it just a simple wire 2 wires together and presto?

Are you trying to wire an outside strip to the outside light? So both come on at the same time?

I would rather just use the power from that switch to power the strip. I can adjust all the dimmer on the strip to accommodate. We dry camp and only run generator minimally. Otherwise I would just run an extension cord into a plug inside the unit.

I drilled a hole through my porch light housing and ran my strip wires through it and into the wall. From there I was able to run the wires into the back of the control panel and tap into the wiring that I needed. I had an open spot on the control panel so I added an inline fuse and a switch for the led lights. Are your lights in the awning roller or on the side of the camper?

I fastened them under the awning to the trailer so we could use them with the awning rolled in as well. I have also seen where guys have rigged a separate bulb that connects right into existing porch light socket. Not sure which route I am going with yet. Might head over to storage this weekend and play with it and look to see if I have room on my panel to add another switch like you suggested Jim. Thanks for the tip.

Got it guys....

I picked up another 1141 bulb which is what is in the RV porch light. Removed the glass and existing ground wire. Soldered 20awg new wires to the hot (center) and ground to the side of bulb casing. Proceeded to fill casing full of hot glue to encase everything. Snipped off the led dc lead and proceeded to solder my new wires to that completing the circuit. Plugged it in to test and it worked wonderfully. Now I just need to encase the wiring under awning as well, make a hole in bottom of my light and complete the task.

Did very similarly to what you did other than mine is color changing and needed the space of the bulb for the controller and remote sensor. I measured down from awning making marks with a pencil to get LED nice and straight.

Where did you buy your led strips from? I've seen people with color changing remote operated lights, those look cool?

Ebay. They are $15-$20 depending on what vendor you get them from. I probably have another $20 in misc. items to get them established but the end result is pretty cool for sure.

I found mine on amazon for about the same price. Be sure to look for exterior and waterproof. As with morphrider, there were extras needed. For me it was the 3M double sided auto body moulding tape. The stuff they put on the led strips is horrible. I put mine strip on the bottom side of the gutter. With the factory tape the strip started dropping in just a couple hours.

Looking back on my purchased items, I did end up paying $45 shipped for the whole kit. Waterproof RV strip kit with adjustable changing colors. They seem to be cheaper now and even at that price it was way cheaper than any box store.

Thats everything I had with my set. The only thing is you can only run that off of 110. You would still have to fabricate from that point to run off of DC. If someone didnt want to deal with removing bulb area then best bet would be to hard wire it in via a separate toggle switch as stated in a previous posting.

I says you can: "Connect the Strip light wire lead to any 12V or 110v switched source and enjoy your new LED Awning light for 50,000 plus hours"

So it's both.

That's what I think is very misleading. By the pictures they are showing what is supplied, which is your 110 power source plug which then plugs in to the RGB. Unless I am not understanding this anyway but all the receptacles within an RV is only 110 source, correct? Is there a certain receptacle that can be switched 110 to 12 volt?

Connect it to the 12 v line that goes to the factory awning lights. I also have a 110v plug by the awning that is controlled by a switch. I would prefer to cut the line to the factory junk and connect to the new led set.

That's what I wasn't understanding then. I don't have factory awning lights. That would have been too easy. Thanks Mark.
