Mounting stuff on rear bumper

Hello,

I see the post below for the rear bumper cargo carrier. Anyone doing anything else to mount storage back there? H ave you Run into:

-- any restrictions on weight
-- problems with welds cracking on the bumper/frame?
-- what to do with spare tire
-- used a hitch mount carrier with a mount like: https://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Fab-Pro...+cargo+carrier

thanks

Mike

I went a little crazy and made a custom folding cargo carrier for ours with brackets that bolted up and tied the bumper back into the main frame of the camper essentially bypassing the welds all together. I have read the horror stories of people who just bolt the receiver up to the bumper and the bouncing up and down stresses the welds and eventually just falls off. On the other hand there are plenty of success stories of people who have never had a problem doing it that way either. As for the spare I installed a BAL hide-a-spare https://youtu.be/hsPze0XeHj8 in front of the front axle and love it. keeps the tire tucked up under the trailer out of the elements.

On our redwood, the spare was up under the 5'er and it was the filthiest thing on the rv with all the road spray and dust

FYI - I too have heard (and seen) pros and cons about bumper mounts.... years ago the squar bumper was a massive piece of steel and could tow/hold a lot... but nowdays - not so much !

Was following a buddy in his brand new 5'er that had the oem spare tire on the rear bumper and watched it twist and almost fall off in front of me

the factory welds were not good enough for that. much less much else...

if you still want your new rv frame warranty, I would get some written correspondence from the factory before doing anything (JMHO !)

I have a tote I'd like to mount to the back bumper. Bought one of those mounts for a bike rack I put on the old travel trailer. Now with the 5'er we need to find more storage, losing the bed space and all. Going to get a receiver that mounts to the front of the truck to haul the bikes. Most of the cargo carriers I see are 48"x24" and my tote is 52"x27". May need to have one made.

Im in the same boat with trying to find more spaces for storage and have a box. I also have a clearance issue with how close the bumper is to the body of the camper. I am going to wait till the warranty runs out, then look at welding in more brackets/adding strength.

Besides the tote, I have a perfectly good bike rack that needs a home, and until I put a front receiver on the truck, the rear bumper (with straps) seems like the best place. Just need to add strength to help convince me I won't leave it the bumper somewhere on the highway.

Added small storage to rear bumper.

I added this box to the rear bumper. I have only the front crawl space on the TT, so I had to add additional storage. I installed it with heavy duty "L" brackets and also bolted it to the bumper.
