For those looking to carry bikes and stay away from the beating they take when mounted to the back of the your 5th wheel. I just had a receiver tube mounted on my pinbox. Pictures below, full details in my blog -http://www.tgifrv.com/2011/10/pinbox-mounted-bike-rack/

I put one on our 5er and now use it for our flag.

I have carried our two bikes there for over 20,000 miles with somewhat similar setup. I bolted my bracket to pinbox instead of welding and my carrier is not the hanging bike type. Have had no problems! I also use as flagpole holder when parked!

Great solution for that bouncing bike problem!

I've already gone through one bike rack (the arms bent due to the bikes bouncing so much) and have modified my current rack with an vertical extension and straps going down to the arms to help carry the weight. I've also installed a reinforcement system to keep the bumper from twisting, but I'm still not happy...

My issue is that I tow with a short bed (Ram Mega Cab) and I'm concerned with clearances with the bikes on the nose of the trailer. Any one used a similar setup with a short bed?

Thanks,
Lewis

Nice job. I was thinking of doing much the same. Not sure if welding on the pin box would weaken it. For now the bikes can ride in the truck bed.

The pinbox is made of plate steel. Welding on the receiver should actually make it stronger since it now has an additional vertical support... much like angle iron is less likely to bend then flat steel. I was going to have it bolted on but figured if I ever got another rig the angle of the pinbox would be different anyways and I couldn't use the old one. Welding is one less place for a failure as I don't have to worry about bolts breaking. In case of resale also believe I've added value, I doubt having it in place would take away any more value then having 4 or 6 holes drilled in the pinbox.

The only way to know is to take your bike rack and hold it in place with the truck at different angles.

The frame police must be going soft on you. I'am really suprised no one commented about it voiding your warranty.

It's not welded to the frame, only the pinbox

hhh,

Now that's one beefy bike rack. Even a gusset on the riser. Looks like you could attach a ladder if needed on this guy!

Any other uses besides bikes yet?

Other uses besides the bike rack? Yes when the trailer is parked for a month or two like it is now in Yuma I use the receiver hitch on the back of my 5th wheel for a flag poleand the receiver hitch on the pinbox for a pole mounted weather station.

So far no but haven't been in one place to use it for anything else. So far 1800 miles and no problems. I have a carrier in my backreceiverso will likely use the front one for my flag pole mount once I'm set up in one place for a bit.
