plexiglass on screen door

This mod was started a year or 2 ago. How is it holding up for you guys that have done it? Are your panels getting scratched up or broken? Whats the thinking after having it this long. It would be interesting to get some feedback on this one. Pro and con.

Lloyd mine has been on for two years now, no scratches but begining to crack on one of the corners thru the screw hole. I think that I will put rubber gromets in the next one

I have had plexiglas panels on my upper and lower door screens for over a year with no problems. I used plastic window clips from Lowe's that i can turn so I can easily remove the upper screen or lower screen anytime I want for ventilation. I put the plexiglas on the inside so I can easily reach it to remove it. I normally don't remove the lower screen plexiglas because the black cat likes to stand with his paws there to look ouside.

I did this mod 3 years ago and it is time to change out the panels. I took out the screens to make it easier to clean. This time I willuse lenex panels. My wife still thinks this was just done for her. I just changed out the privacy door panel with a smoked glass panel so she can see out in the cooler weather.

I velcro ours, I want to move them to the out side vrs the inside as it gets in the way at times of the screen door shutting, Doing it this way makes it very easy to remove when weather permits. You want the thinnest plexi glass as you can get due to the weight. It does not take much to make the screen door flex.

We use the heaviest mil clear vinyl available at WalMart and attach it with velcro. It is easy to remove and store. We have been using this method for the past ten years with good results.

Russ, I take it you are talking about rigid vinyl??
Also, did you apply Velcro "all" the way around or just in spots??

The vinyl was the soft type that they have in the fabric dept. It would be used for a table cloth. I think it was 6-8 mil thickness. I used the heaviest they had. I use three pieces of velcro on each side of the two panels. I used a separate panel for the top and bottom of the screen door. They roll up and are easy to store, that was the main reason I didn't use the plexiglass. We didn't have the room to store the plexiglass panels in our other trailers and they worked well so we continued to use them in our Cruiser.

I never thought about using soft vinyl. Mind set always said-----had to be the hard stuff.

Speaking of privacy door panel...ours faces west most of the time at home and lets too much heat in during the summer...anyone find a way to reduce heat and still let light in?...have seen some with what looks like stained glass inserts(probably plastic)...ideas?

I first had plexiglass that was siliconed in place as wasn't as neat a job as this. The glass shop went to the dealer and removed the door covered the door and reinstalled it for $120. I have no desire to camp without A/c so no need for a screen door. It does really well with the a/c's on.... </TD></TR></T></TABLE>

<DIV style="MARGIN: 5pt 0.75pt">I used a heavy clear shower curtain. Cut it to size and used Velcro on the edges. Nice thing about using the flexible type material is that you can easily remove it. Basically when I want some air to come in through the door I just role up the vinyl. Probably the best mod I've made to date. Total cost $20

Last year I noticed that Cedar Creek used flexible plastic on their screen door which is the same stuff I believe that they make Jeep soft top windows out of. I looked it up on the internet and everyplace I found wants to sell it only in huge rolls. It looks perfect to me for use on a screen door. Does anybody know where you can buy this stuff in small quantities? I think it would work well with velcro and you could roll it up when not in use.

Mine I cut to fit in the outer grove then used clips on the bottom. I would not want to camp with out it after 4 years.
