Portable Fire Pits

So,

Most of the campgrounds we're staying at this summer don't have fire pits or permit burning on the ground..but do permit portable pits.

Anyone have an opinion on these. We were looking at the propane units but seems to be so wasteful, rather get a metal folding pit and find firewood at each destination.

Thoughts?

Big question on the propane units is how much gas you burn through running these things at night.

With refilling the #20 tanks at the campground, it can get pricey. Some of these units claim to run 6-8 hours on high, 13-16 hours on medium. So you might get two nights out of one tank. At 20 bucks a refill (being optimistic), a week at a "no fire" campground can run you $60-$80 bucks easily.

OhioMark, I have a similar unit like the first two you mentioned from amazon. My wife picked it up at Walmart I think actually. Looks just like what you are looking at. Collapses and all. Came with a cloth case so when we are done, I rinse it, let it dry and pack it up. No sooty mess on other stuff. I have even modified it to put a grill on top of it to cook. Works good for us.

hmmm..the more i look..these things eat 20 lb tanks for breakfast...

the campsites im going to dont have pits but permit "bbq" burning...maybe get a basic pit and load up on cheap wood.

If you buy fire wood and not bring it that can be just as expensive. Lots of places can't carry your own wood in anymore. if it has a no burn then you have nothing at all. just thinking outloud. lol

I did see someone in Ocean City have one of the propane ones last year and they hid the tank in a large planter turned upside down and screwed a table top on it looked great.

Spent one night last fall around a friends camper with a portable propain fire pit. they do look nice, but not alot of heat. We were practicaly sitting on the fire trying to stay warm. I dont know if this helps your decision, but just wanted to add my experience in.

On another note, how do you like towing your 5er with your F150?

i could put a dvd in of a fireplace burning and put the tv on the outside mount!

..my setup is simply wonderful on the road..but I have to admit that I've made a lot of research to find both components. The First thing you need to Be able to tow a 5er is payload. Even a little one like mine has a 1450# on the pin when wet. My F150 has the HD payload package (easy to recognize with his 7-lugs wheels) that gave me an incredible 2213# of payload!!...after something like 6 000 miles, I like my combo more and more each time I go on the road

Here's the one we have, from Lowes. Virtually the same as the Outland, but 2/3 the cost. It's great, we keep it on low flame for looks and smores. Not really for cooking, but OK for anything held on a stick over the flame. We used it last in October, before we needed any real heat. Easy enough to throw in the back of the truck, but it requires its own LP tank. Maybe I'll work a tap-off or just screw it into one of the RV tanks. IMO, carrying firewood is a hassle, the stuff you pick up is wet, and you'll burn $5 worth of wood per night, or $20 worth of propane in four nights.

Below is the model we just purchased and thankfully it arrived yesterday... in time for this weekend's trip. I have also found more and more campgrounds aren't permitting fires so this is intended to be our trusty back-up.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Good price, especially considering it has a nifty handle which most others charge more for.
