Range top
Being full time for nine years, we use the range a lot. Always having to replace those grommets on the grill top. Finally put 1/4" fender washers on them, problem solved. Guess I should paint 'em black!

You might want to etch them with vinegar first. That will take the galvanize off so they will hold paint.

Stainless steel has a very smooth surface. Paint will be difficult to stick to it. So I'd scruff it up with steel wool first and use an acid etching primer. I know it's a small job but the prep will pay off.

I'm not gonna paint them. At least not till DW tells me she wants them painted. I've actually got a can of self etching primer somewhere. I painted some chrome rims on a dune buggy I had.

Or heat them with a blow torch or on the stove. They'll turn a nice color.

I understand what you did, and it's creative. But why are you replacing the rubber grommets? Do they wear loose from removing the grate to clean? Or do they get cruddy from heat/food/etc? The fender washers will shield them, but don't you still need rubber underneath to grip and hold the grate? I've noticed these, and we use the cooktop often. Tell me what to expect.

Some of the pots we use are cast iron. They tend to push the grill down thru the grommet. Once that pinched out area goes thru the grommet, it goes easier and easier.

OK, it's a strain-relief from heavy pots/pans. I get it now. I knew what you were doing, but didn't know why. Thanks for the clarification!
