I'd like to redo the caulking. What are you guys using to remove the old caulking?

Tom, I use a Hyde 5 in 1painters toolon ours. I watched a mobile RV tech use one on our unit right after we got it to do some warranty work and it worked so well I bought one. Just take your time and it works great.

Is it really necessary to remove the old caulk? CantI just go over the old?...

The pro's use a piece of plexglass 3/4 or 1 in wide and sharpened at one end like a chisel. Will not scratch the fiberglass.Works great.

I have used a plastic putty knife that I purchased at Lowe's or Menards for 49 cents. When it wears out its only 49 cents for a new one.

The reason I asked is I was concerned with scratching the finish. And there sure is a lot of caulk on there

The problem with not removing the old is that some of it may be loose and then you won't get a good seal.

Lots of edges on that tool, can you give us some idea of how to use so it won't scratch the gelcoat. I need to re-caulk around the trim and windows and would like to remove as much caulk as possible but would like to prevent taking off other material.

I haven't had a problem using the tool, perhaps the Dicor caulk on the RV's stays softer than the tile caulks talked about in the reviews. My friend who is an RV tech told me about this tool, it is what he uses.

I've used this tool myself and I have to disagree with the bad reviews. I've used it in the house and on the 5er and it does a pretty good job. The sharp pointed corner does a good job of digging out the old stuff. It can be tough to get into tight spots because of where the flat scraper is positioned. Also, it does not stay "sharp" very long. The edges and points do tend to get dull. It's plastic, what do they expect? It's also 3 bucks, buy a couple of them.

I redid nearly all my dollhouse. I use varsol(mineral spirit) and a mastic knife smoothered on a sharpening stone to remove the nicks . Go over it a few times with generous amount of varsol to soften it, scrape and clean the remnants w. varsol again. Many hours of fun ahead
