Had the bed slide rebuilt on our Unit and went to put some items under the bed today and it pulled away from the wall - well back to the shop again. This has to be all related to the rebuild of the bed slide.

I am sorry you again have an issue.... If I were you I'd find a way to correct the bed issue yourself. After that, I'd stick a big "FOR SALE BY OWNER" sign on it and move onto something better built that you can use. I would find the lack of use and wait time unacceptable.

Best of luck.

Lots of time the mattres will stress the hinge board if it is monted close to the wall with out room to pivot. Looks like the board with one tab on it could be 6" wider and of coarse shortening the main board the same 6"Edited by: we-canoe

Hello Norsky,

This is exactly what happened to ours. I think this is a
common problem. Those long screws never hit a wall stud. When the mattress
pallet is lifted to gain access to the under the bed storage the mattress
pushes hard against the outside wall and there is great stress is on the hinge
board. I spent a long day fixing ours and now we make sure to pull the mattress
toward the foot before lifting the pallet.

It probably didn’t help that we got a standard size mattress
and it was longer and heavier than the one supplied with the rig. I will copy
and paste my modification from a previous post:

Solution: <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /></span>

1. </span></span></span>Remove
plywood platform by disconnecting the air cylinders and removing the hinge screws
now carefully remove the platform to view the damage.</span>

2. </span></span></span>The
board that holds the other side of the hinge was pulled away from the wall and
unfastened from the bed frame sides.</span>

3. </span></span></span>The
factory installed screws that were into the outside wall had not hit a stud.
They were only into the thin paneling and the staples used to hold the hinge
board to the frame sides had pulled free.</span>

4. </span></span></span>I
cut a piece of 5/8” plywood to fill the entire area; from the bed frame side
walls, down to the floor and up to the bottom of the hinge board. (It is always
good to support weight down to a good footing — and not hang it from screws.)</span>

5. </span></span></span>I
framed this piece of plywood with 1”x 2” boards and marked on to the plywood
where the RV wall studs would be. I then carefully screwed this framed plywood
to the bed frame sides and into the outside wall (into the metal studs) and
screwed the hinge board down into the plywood frame work.</span>

6. </span></span></span>Now
the weight of the mattress and occupants that was down onto the hinge board is
transferred to the floor by the plywood. The forces that would attempt to pull
the hinge board way from the wall will find it difficult to split my 1x2 frame
attached to the bed frame sides.</span>

7. </span></span></span>The
mattress platform is now ready to be reattached to the bed via the original
hinge board that is now resting exactly where it was factory installed. While we
had the mattress platform removed I took the opportunity to beef it up with a
few strips of 1” x 4” lengths of oak, screwed and glued to the underside. </span>

8. </span></span></span>Now every
time DW wants access to the under-bed storage area, we pull the mattress away
from the outside wall before lifting the platform. The new Verlo standard size
extra firm mattress is an inch longer than the original and thicker which
amplified the pressure on the wall problem. Now when the slide comes in the
mattress is <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">tight[/b] to the front of
the dresser.</span>

Bob --- If I am correct you have had quite a lot of problems with your camper. Some of them I would consider major problems. Have you checked into the LEMON LAW? Do you think it would apply to you???

Kamper Dave - thanks for the info! Looks like the right fix. So how does on find the studs - being aluminum framing a standard stud finder may not find them.

The panels are so thin you can bang on them with a knuckle and hear and feel the stud easy. A lot of times you can just push on panels and feel the stud.

Good Morning Norsky,

Just make sure that those new wall screws are not too long.
:&gt Those 47 staples that didn’t hold are easier to cut off than remove.

On a lighter note: My nephew stopped in again to go pheasant
hunting and again brought sour cream cookies from NORSKY’s NOOK. I was going to
share them with the DW but they vanished before I got home. Darn!

Just a FYI - the studs are really extruded tube aluminum, don't look to them as an anchor that'll effectively take stress. When I installed a tv arm I found the stud centers (decent stud finder works on aluminum) and used hollow wall anchors. These anchors open up and engage the wall and stud.

Dayle1 and I both have a fix for this a while back. You can find them here. He has pics embedded, mine are linked to photobucket. I didn't do it because it broke, I did it because the bed was off level in every direction and sagging in the middle.

My stud sensor will detect steel studs too, but they're easy enough to find without one.

Thanks for all of the info. Our bed/slide design is more like yours. Think I'll be making some additional modifications after I get the camper back.

Will keep all of you posted on the repairs.

Picked up the Unit on Saturday -looks like they added some additional support on the slide wall - did not go to the extend to make it 100%. Guess the minimum to fix was authorized. Checked it out and it appears to be fixed for now. If it fails again I'll fix it myself and do it "100%".

At least the slide continues to go out in in without any problems - looking forward to next years camping season. First trip - Myrtle beach.

And here I thought it was just me. My bed frame has pulled away from the wall, one of the gas supports has broken off it's mount, and the middle sags. Looks like I have a project ahead of me. Thanks guys for posting your solutions!
