Generator platform
I just bought a new Generator for our 2010 Cruiser, and would like to install a a cargo carrier w/ramp on the back of the trailer. I know I can't just bolt it to my bumper, so has anyone done this, and if so, what did you do? The generator weights 200 lbs, and the carrier is rated for 500 lbs. I would probably built a removable enclosure to protect the generator during bad weather. Any advice, (besides having my head examined) will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Louie

Hello and Welcome. I believe I can help you. I do not have a generator that I carry but a power wheelchair. It along with the carrier weighs around 450 -475 Lbs.
I have had the same setup on the last 4 campers with out any problems. I have a 2" receiver that is welded to the frame in 3 spots on each side. The main receiver tube is around 3 ft long and sticks out behind the bumper around 4 ins. There are 3 cross tubes - one just inside the bumper one at the other end and one in the middle. There uprights from each cross tube to the frame. Everything is welded - NO BOLTS so when the trailer gets traded it stays with it and I start over on the current camper.
I talk to the welding shop and show them what I want and when they say that's overkill you don't need all that I say the same thing. I ask them if they are married and have children? That gets a funny look but then I say now just think your wife and kids are following behind me and the road is rough Would you feel better with the setup you recommend or my "overkill" ? I have never had anyone yet not do it like I wanted.
When we leave the to travel we go just a few miles and then check the chair. We also stop every 100 miles or so and check it. I use the heaviest ratchet straps that will work and check them after each use also carry some spares.
If you do it just make sure that you have the strongest hitch that you can and if the welding shop wont do what you want find another one. The family behind you wont ever thank you but will live to see another day.
If you need any further help just let me know.

Generator Mount
dagst1,
Thanks for the great, and informative response. The snow is finally gone, so I just have to wait for the yard to dry out enough to pull the 5er back up onto the driveway, in a couple of weeks, and Ill be off to the fabricators!

Bumper carrier
This is how I did mine. Bought new 4x4 bumper 3/16inch thick, original bumper is 1/16. went to local welding shop for $80 cutoff old bumper welded on new one with gussets on each side. Bought 2 swagman bolt on bumper adapters.bought harbor freight basket, took off middle rail on basket and added two rails to align with bumper hitches. carried 3000 watt generator all over never any problems. Just didnt like using just one bar sliding into a mount. Two makes it a lot more stable. I have also made a carrier that will slide into the mounts and hold my cricket golf cart.

I did this to the back of my crossroads cruiser travel trailer. Since the stock bumper is only butt welded to frame, I had a steel frame welded under it directly to the RV frame rail. Then had an aluminum storage box fabricated and bolted to the steel frame sticking out. It’s actually two boxes in one, one for the 3000w generator and one for general storage. Then just use portable ramps to slid it out.

That's quite a container you've got on the back of your 5er.
Does it seem to alter how the rig tows or handles?

It’s not a 5th wheel. It’s a travel trailer. I had air bags installed on the rear coils of my ram 2500 6.7L diesel so I have the trailer perfectly leveled when I travel. I just have to adjust the pressure in the airbags to compensate for how full the water tank and storage compartment is. It pulls like a dream. I don’t notice any difference from when there was no storage box and since I had it installed.

Thanks. And I make further adjustments depending on whether I have the motorcycle in the back or not. In all cases I make sure the trailer is level front to back when I head out on the road.

I bought a 30" platform off of Craigs that was made to haul motorcycles, just had my welder add a second receiver on and it's as solid as can be. Besides the bike I also haul a Honda eu3000is generator, which weigh in @ 140#. Here it is..
