Today I discovered that our GFCI outlet in our kitchen was tripped, but it would not reset. I made sure we didn't have anything like a lamp with a short plugged into the same circuit, but nothing was plugged in. I noticed that our refrigerator was only operating on gas instead of electricity so I checked its outlet and it was dead. I unplugged it, but the GFCI still wouldn't reset. I had an extra GFCI outlet left over from a remodeling job so I swapped it out, but it still wouldn't reset.

I guess there's a short someplace that I'm going to have to find.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Get underneath your RV & open up the gray electrical junction boxes. They probably have water or condensation in them. Worked for me.

Also check the outlet in the fridge access area. When I washed the camper a few weeks back, I must have gotten some water in this outlet as my kitchen GFI also tripped. After tracing down the wiring, I took apart the fridge plug and sure enough there was a bit of water inside. So after drying the outlet out and putting everything back together, all was good. The other area that FFFord mentioned under the slide out is also a common item as well. DId you wash the camper or drive through some rain recently?

I did wash it before our last trip (7 weeks ago). I'm pulling out the refrigerator plug now to see if there's any water in it. I'm also about to get underneath the dinnette/sofa slideout and openup the junction box.

Well, you guys were right. I went ahead and got underneath the sofa/dinnette slideout to pull the cover off. As soon as I did, a lot of water came out. Looking at the water line, I would say there was about 1" of water in the box. I pulled all the wires out andunscrewed the wire nuts. It's drying now. I wonder if I should drill a few weep holes into the bottom of the box? I'm not sure how the water got in. It appears the seal on the box held b/c the water stayed in the box and couldn't come out. I just wonder how it got in there?

With the boxes getting hot on the outside & cold on the inside & vice versa, they sweat. They can also get rain water in them, while driving down the road. The end of the seal tite that they put the wires in, are not always sealed. I put silicone on all the wire nuts & have had no more problems. Edited by: FFFord

Glad you found the issue....Good call on the silicone, I will have to keep a tube of that stuff handy in case I have issues with the other side of the trailer....

I guess I spoke too soon. I let the box and wires dry out and put everything back together. I hit reset on the GFCI and it still wouldn't reset. I swapped out the 20amp for a 15amp GFCI that I had in the garage and it still wouldn't reset. I either have two, defective GFCI plugs, or there's a short somewhere else.

Check for additional junction boxes. I know on my rig, there are four on kitchen slide (street side) and at least one on the dinette slide (curb side).

It's dark now so I'll wait until tomorrow to check. Will all of the juction boxes be visible? Hopefully there aren't any that are covered up by the black material underneath the RV.

The ones mounted on the underside of the slides are mounted out near the outer edge of each slide. They are typically a 2x4 electrical box with a screw cover.

Also instead of using the silicone on the wires. Go to an electrical supply store , I think Home Depot has them too, and get some waterproof wire nuts. They have some kind of white stuff inside the nut itself that keeps the water out. I have used them myself in an outside area that gets wet and they havent failed me yet.

I had a issue just like you had with the GFI not resetting. I found the wire that fed my big slide got pinched by one of the tires and shorted out on the frame.

GFCI not resetting you say? Had a similar problem and after 2 hour realized the breaker on the Inverter was also off. Check it out may save you some time. Mike

Hopefully you have resolved your issue by now. I had the same problem with my 315re cruiser. It turned out to be a combination of water in the junction boxes under the slides and the dealer also found that during construction a nail was driven through a wire at the receptacle box under the awning. I don't know how they found the nail issue but it fixed the problem. As normal, Crossroads stepped up and covered it under their warrantee.

There appears to be only one juction box at the rear corner (under the living room slide). I was able to determine that the wire that goes to the outlet that's next to the dinnette was the culpret. I disconnected it and had no more GFCI tripping issues. When I have time to play around with it again, I'll try to figure out why it's just that outlet. We don't ever use it anyway, but just knowing there's an issue will drive me nuts! I'll have to track it down eventually.

Road spray water uses the electrical conduit to travel
between locations.

In our case, water was entering the top of the electrical
junction boxes that are located on the outer wall of the slide-outs. Both the
port and starboard slide out junction boxes were full of water. When traveling
down highway these two junction boxes are just behind the spinning tires and
get soaked with road spray. These two junction boxes have a cable that exited
up into the wall of the slide out. There was NO caulking at this hole location
and so it easily filled with water. The water then flowed down the conduit to
the next junction box that is located on the frame and then it filled with
water as well. So, we needed to deal with FOUR wet junction boxes. We re-made
all of the electrical connections, installed new box covers, new foam gaskets
and silicon caulked all connections and holes. We glued the new foam gaskets
for each junction box in place so they would not sneak out of position. There is
no way to get the caulking gun nozzle anywhere near the top of the slide out junction
boxes, so you will need some rubber gloves and a hand full of high grade
silicon caulking.

After the repairs we did change out the CFIC outlet and unfortunately
used one with a childproof automatic internal cover. When this safely cover ceases
up it is almost impossible to get anything plugged in to the outlet. It isn't good then child proof becomes dear wife proof.

Best of luck.

Check junction box(s) on the opposite side slide.

check outside outlet over entry door, we had the same problem every time i washed unit or it rained. The seal around the outlet leaked just enough.
