I was perusing the Crossroads Cruiser construction features web page today and noticed something that intrigued me. Apparently, the new models come with 16" aluminum tires. I suppose that would remedy the blowout problems but I'm not sure about ride and durability. Anyone have any of these "new" tires?

They might have gone to 16" wheels but I would be willing to bet they still get the cheap China Bomb tires.

The cruiser patriot package has had 16 inch tires since the '09 models. Our '10 came with 16's. Don't know if they have expanded it to all cruisers. I always felt the 15's on a loaded cruiser were very marginal from a load capacity. Thats why the 16's.

Maybe the wheels are now rubber to compensate for the aluminum tires.

I think the OP is making a tongue in cheek reference to those aluminum tires, lol. I agree with him, I bet the ride quality of an aluminum tire is pretty sorry.

I had a 2007 Cruiser 30 SK with 15" wheels and Mission tires (China). The tires were made in 2006. I never had a problem with them. Always made sure had proper inflation, and didn't drive over 65 MPH. I don't know if that was the reason I never had a blow out, but I'm going to stick with it and hope my luck holds out.

Tommy,
I agree, I had a 2012 with 15" tires and kept them at proper levels and I also never drive over 62...just to be safe...and I've never had a problem, tires look like new...and I've never put 1# of air in them either...my new unit has 16" E rated tires...I hope they do me as well as my previous tires did.

Jim --- I also have a new Cruiser with the 16" wheels. I don't know it to be true but I beleive that driving at the higher speeds adds to the heat in the tire and the failure of the tire. I was on an interstate highway doing 65 MPH, and a guy with a 36 footer passed me like I was standing still. As he went by I noticed one of the tires on the right side of his 5er was GONE. He pulled back into the slow lane about 5 lenghts ahead of me .I managed to get up next to him and motioned him over. There was only the bead of the tire left on the one wheel, and the other tire was starting to peel. I made up my mind then 65 was going to be the max speed for me!!!!

I agree. The ST tires are speed rated at a max speed of 65 mph. If you consistently drive faster than that, it is at your risk and maybe others around you. JMHO.

Tommy, you have had much better luck with your Missions than I had. Ours were always at 80 psi and never above 65 mph and they did not make 5k miles. They were 16" load range E. Kind of a pisser to have to put $800 worth of new tires on a new trailer but I went with the BFG Commercial LT tires and have never looked back. I will never own another trailer with ST tires.

I am willing to bet the most common cause of tire failures on 5th wheel trailers is curb hopping. It is very easy to do and most of the time you never know you have done it. Speeds above 65 on ST tires is probably a second common cause. Third would be improper pressures.

Anyone know how to add air to these things? What is the rated pressure? Will TPMS work with aluminum tires? I guess with such new technology, there will be many more questions.

Don't lock up the brakes with the aluminum tires...they're soft and you'll develop flat spots.

Joe Music --- I am not making fun of you just trying to correct an error you made. There is no such thing as aluminum tires. Tires are made of a rubber compound. The wheels on you camper are made of aluminum.
On the side of you camper you may have a chart with the size of your tires and the presure they should be inflated to. The chart should be a sticker around the tire area outside wall of your camper.

Our unit came with the 16 inch wheels as part of the enhanced package.
Never had a blowout. Have had fifth wheels since 2003. Previous problems have been related to axle issues (2003 Everest and 2009 Montana)
I check the tire pressure before each trip and drive 65 to 67 mph.

Okay people, I guess this zipped by some of you. The item to which I referred on the Crossroads web site was 16" ALUMINUM TIRES. There is, as far as I know, no such thing as aluminum tires. It was an obvious typo and, as noted by another poster, I was just trying to be humorous -- obviously unsuccessfully.

You never know with this bunch, they may just put aluminum tires on them in the future.

Another thing I found odd is they are claiming R15 sidewall insulation in the Cruiser. That is more than the Redwood is listed at (R9) and as much as a Mobile Suites which has 3 1/4" thick sidewalls.
