There may be a post someplace on this subject already so please bear with me if there is.
I have considered getting a rear view camera system for my 5th wheel. This seems to me a good idea for keeping an eye to what is behind the rig. Not to be used just for backing up but also for lane changing when moving. My criteria lets out those types that activate when the tranny is put into reverse. Also, I am not in the price range capability of most I have seen advertised from $300 & exceeding $800 or more.

So, with that said does anyone out there have some experience with a rear view camera system, NOT reverse activated and wireless....for UNDER $300????...that can be activated when moving forward. I tried the i-net some but nothing found without the reverse to activate system in the low end price range.

Thanks for any input any of you may have.

I use one of the Peak brand that is supposed to come on in reverse. What I did was wire it into one of the clearance lights instead of the back up light circuit. That way any time I want to see what is going on is to just turn on the parking lights. Camera on! I have also wired in a switch to turn the camera off in case I am running after dark.

I install mine on the inside of the rear window with a suction cup mount and just run the cable across the floor to the sending unit under the sink cabinet.

This has worked well for about 3 years now.

Check out rear view safety. Works great two years running and I leave mine on all the time. I mounted a second camera for the back of the truck as well.

Hey guys....really fast response to my backup camera questions. Thanks a heap!

Will be checking into both bits of info.....You can tell I'm not a mechanic.....never thought to use another power source for the camera other then the reverse connection they suggested...which is good for that purpose. I want to be able to check my "behind" anytime not just when backing.....new at this game of running a 5th wheel vs a small pop-up unit or the tractor trailer where one can see around the load.

First trip out w/5th wheel (which will be a test run of trk/trailer/me) is wk of Sept 24....from NW WI to SE corner of MN for 4 days....short run but hope to learn lots from it....like pulling into gas pumps....& out again....learning how far (miles) a tank of fuel will carry us....bad timing tho as gas here is now at $3.999 & higher.

We use the PEAK backup camera with 3 screen and the camera extension

cable. You need the extension to get the transmitted closer to the receiver / video

display located in the cab. We purchased a remote control relay from Dino-Direct.

The remote cost less than $10.00 and the small key chain push button will close

the 12 volt DC relay from 100 meters distance. We use the 12 volt DC receptacle

in the Cruiser’s forward bedroom to power the Dino-Direct relay; when the key-chain

button is activated then the camera circuit board receives power and of course

the video display receives the image. We mounted the camera inside of the RV on

the rear window sill. Now before backing up or passing a vehicle we activate

the system to see when it is safe to backup or pull back into the right lane.

With the PEAK system you will occasionally receive signals

from folks that have wired theirs to be active all of the time as well as

security cameras when driving in business districts.

I also have the Rear View Safety setup. I bought a two camera system thru Costco and mounted one on the back of the truck (On the tailgate) and one on the top rung of the ladder. Works great.
