15 miles from home on a 200 mile trip over the 4th weekend we had one of the OEM ST235/80/16 Towmax tires blow. Failure originated at the intersection of the tread and sidewall. The radial belts appear to have failed.

I run at 60 MPH, don't curb hop, and have a TPMS. I had just looked at the monitor less than 1/4 mile before the failure and the tire was at normal pressure.

These tires are within a week of being 4 years old althoughthe camperis 2-1/2 years old.

Replacing all with GY G614 RST tomorrow.

Those G614 tires are rated at 110psi cold pressure load range G. You may be wise to look at new wheels with a tire designed to run with that kind of pressure. I wouldn't trust our existing trailer wheels at that high of psi. $400 a piece for those babies. I don't doubt they are great tires but you may need a wheel upgrade to go with it. That's why I'm considering the Bridgestone Duravis R500 or the Michelin XPS Rib when I need to replace (probably in 1 or 2 years).

I purchased a new wheel for the spare - same wheel as the ones installed by the factory - they are rated for only 80 lbs.

You could probably run the G614s at 80 lbs - it will impact the load carrying capability - 3750 lbs at 110 lbs - probably about 3100 lbs at 80 lbs.

At the CAT scale I had 9220 lbs on the trailer axles.

Some folks like Maxxis M8008 tires - about $165.00 each at Discount tires.

I replaced my original tires with the Maxxis and have no complaints. If you don't have 16" wheels (so you can find good ST tires) the Maxxis are the best 15" wheel option in my opinion.

The LT 245 75 R16 is a wider and shorter tire than the original ST tire. If your setup is nose high like most, the shorter tire will aggravate that issue and the increased width might have clearance issues. Many owners that switch to LT tires go with 235 85 R16 size. Width is identical to the ST tire and height is slightly greater, so this helps level the fiver. Only issue is clearance between tires, mine is greater than the minimum recommended and my wheel chocks still clamp into place between the tires.

Larry, what is the minimum clearance between tires? That's the problem I up against.

As I recall, it is 3/4 inch, but I may be wrong. My spacing is about 1-3/4 inch, Spacing between axle centers is 33-1/4 inches, so in theory a tire diameter of 32-1/2 inches would still leave a 3/4 inch space. But that would be a big jump from the factory ST tires and not something I would feel comfortable with. Hope this helps.

I went from the sizes below and if I remember correctly I lost about 1" between the tires. I still have about 4" between the tires after the upgrade.

Old - Mission ST235/80R16 Range E

New - BFG Commercial T/A LT235/85R16Range E

Keith,
You are correct, the difference in diameter is 0.93 inch.

I'm kinda beating this to death but am having a hard time deciding what to buy for to replace the original tires. I am now consideringthe Cooper SRM II 235 85 16LT . Less money than the T/A commercial or Michelin. The description sounds like an ideal trailer tire with commercial grade compound and solid shoulders. Comments would be welcome.....Al

Cooper makes a good tire. I think they would work fine.
