Hi guys,

New to the forum and have a couple ofquestions for you. We recently bought a 2008 30 foot Cruiser fifthwheel and are trying to get set up for a trip to Yellowstone at the end of August.

Do any of you have All Terrain tires on your TV and if so how do they rate?

Also wanting to upgrade the trailer tires from 15" to 16" light truck tires. Is this something you would recommend?

We have only taken the trailer out for one weekend so far but it was a blast. It's just the Husband and I (Charles and Robin) so we'll be looking forward to attending some rally's and meeting new people.

Thanks in advance

Robin

I have Cooper Discoverer AT3's on my 3500 dually 3500
I had 6 discovers on her for the last set and just replaced all of them with this newer model
I have had very good luck with Cooper Tires and have them on our cars too.

Welcome Robin, you just missed one heck of a rally about a month ago in Kerrville. Here are a couple of links to some pictures and the post about it is in the rally section.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like a great trip you have planned. We went last year and loved it. Seemed like a suprise around every corner.

I bought new tires for the truck and trailer. For the truck i got the Michelin mtx. These were a highway tread. But i had to get rid of the Continental tires that came on it. ( pretty worn).

For the trailer tires i went with The Goodyear 614RST tires ( 235/85/16) load range G (14 ply). These are 110 psi tires so if you're going to a 16" wheel make sure it's rated for this pressure. I love these tires. Got them at Discount tire. The Goodyears are kind of pricey ($1700) but after having 2 blow-outs on the 10 plys that were on it ,i need some relief.

I do have the TST RV 507 tire monitors on them.

There are some other brands out there that will do just as good. This isthe direction i took on mine.

Take care and the best of times on your trip to Yellowstone. Got me thinking of going back again.

You said you had two blowouts on the 10plys.Was it from an undercapicity tire or an OE quality tire?
I am thinking that the E ratings Should be plenty stout for your rig. Nothing wrong at all with the 14 ply setup but for the normal family to buy that level of Tires plus new wheels can be a maybe not necessary financial hardship.
We have been running e rates on a heavier unit than yours for 8 years now with no problems!
Why did you feel the necessity to go to14 ply or g rates to begin with have you weighed the rig to see where the problem is if you have a weight issue? JMHO Jb

We had the michelin LTX A/T2 load range E on our old armada. They were a good tire for the year we had them (traded the armada in).

It seems like on both blow outs that the sidewall gave up. I'm a stickler for proper inflation.

Everytime i stop i use the handheld temp gun on the bearings and tires. I just got tired of doing everything in my power not to have a tire failure and it seems like i couldn't stop it.

I know some folks may not be able to go this direction but i had to do something to stop it.

I've taken it across scales and was in range for the 10 plys.

I hope this works. I didn't want to go thru this much money either. But i was throwing money at something that wasn't working.

Happy camping

Thanks guys for all the welcomes and replys.

Last Friday we took the Truck to Discount Tire and bought BFG Rugged Terrain Tires but when we picked it up they had put on BFG All Terrains instead. They told us to run them for a while and see if we like them and if not they will order the other ones and switch them out. We don't know how the all terrain tires perform pulling big loads and the Rugged Terrain are suppose to be for Street and off road. Basically we don't know much about either tire.

As for the trailer we will start looking for new 16" wheels and tires and will be sure to take into consideration the pressurerating of the wheel.

It looked like y'all had a good turn out at the Kerrville Rally. We just missed it.

Charles,
My F250 came with the BFG Rugged Terrain Tires and they lasted well over 70,000 miles. When it came time to replace them I was going to stay with the same but Discount had a great deal on the BFG All Terrains so I went that way instead. The A/T's are wearing a lot faster than the Rugged Terrains and I'll be lucky to stretch them to 50,000 miles, this with the same kind of driving. When it comes time to replace them next spring I'll either go back to the Rugged Terrains or switch to the Michelin LTX. I had the Michelin's on my first Super Duty and they are a great tire both on the road and withtire wear.

Got 40,000 on my LTX, they look like new, the lugs pull great in the Wisconsin snow, but are quiet on our bi-annual trips a thousand miles south. Got a ten year old set on my 4 Runner along with 90,000 miles, still look great. Would buy them next time.

Thanks for all the replies to my post. Thanks Patrick, your reply weighed in a lot on our decision. My son-in-law also has the All Terrains and he said they are wearing way too fast. We are taking the truck back to discount tire this week to get the BFG Rugged terrains put on.

Really enjoy reading all the posts. Keep up the great work.

Just one point, not knocking the BFG A/T's. They are a great tire and I was more than happy with the set I had on my Bronco and I did some serious off road in that Bronco. They are just not suited for this kind of towing. I have also noticed a lot more sidewall flex with the A/T's which is not so great when hauling an 11,000 lb trailer down the highway. The back of the truck feels kind of squirrelly.

Walkingstick,
You said you use Cooper Tires on your TV and your Trailer and you like them. I have a Cooper dealer in town although I have always used Goodyear on all my vehicles and been very satisfied with them. At present I have Bridgestone on my vehicle and they ride nice. What type Cooper's did you put on both vehicles if you would please; just wondering if I should check them out too as I will be putting new tires on my TV next year before I go full-time.

Thanks,
Jim
