Wash time

Started washing the fiver today, was waiting for the right time. Great weather, 60's-70's, overcast with some mist. In Colorado this summer the Cruiser picked up a lot of tree sap on the sides and it is a job to clean it off, even with gel gloss siding. Hopefully I will finish tomorrow, then maybe start putting on a coat of wax next week. Got to be ready to roll 1st week in Jan.

I use to have some success using WD-40 for removing pine sap. When we got back from our fall hunting trip this year I noticed some huge globs of pine sap on the truck. WD-40 wouldn't touch it. So I dug out the 70% Denatured Alcohol. That stuff took it off pretty easily.
I was washing the truck at the time, so I used the alcohol carefully and washed the area right away. It didn't seem to do any harm to the finish, or the shine.

I'm in Weslaco, TX for the winter and had the locals wash and wax it today. they also did the awning for me, and put the 303 on all the rubber everywhere. I couldn't be happier with the job they've done. I'm ready for all the sun and hot weather southern Texas can throw at me, at least for the next 3 or so months.

Travel well, travel safe,

It takes a lot less time and effort washing ours !

course I'm past the point of manual labor
so I use these guys:
http://www.bluebeacon.com/

usually find one near where we will be camping - have it done on the way in after the drive there, it's purty while there, and then have it done once more when putting it back in covered storage... (if going back out soon, may wait until the next foray!)

No one will clean my rig as good as I will and simple washing doesn't take sap off. Spent 5 hrs yesterday just on the curb side, still have the bedroom slide and front cap to finish. Then I can finish waxing the Cruiser inside the garage. BTW, the propane door alone had about 450 spots of sap that had to be scrubbed off. But then I'm not working this hard because I want to, just the only way to deal with the problem.

No wonder it's taking you so long to get it washed! You spend all your time counting sap spots!

You're exactly right! no one WILL wash it as well as you will...
ownership has it's privileges.

but just like in marriage, I pick my battles

It never gets done right like when you do it yourself. BUT...with rotator cuff problems, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel and bad knees having someone else do it is starting to look better.

John, is it high pressure and if not, exactly how do they do your unit? Do you stay connected to your TV? I've seen them but had reservations because I wasn't sure how they worked exactly. Any info would be appreciated. And I'll buy you a cold one when I get back to Grapevine.

I've done it both ways,
got out and watched them work the first few times and stayed in - never disconnected the 5er most times I get the truck done at the same time too.

I wasn't sure how they did it at first so wanted to watch... and asked the supervisor about it - he says they do rv's all the time and know about being careful around vents, decals, etc...

I figured if big ole' mean teamster truck drivers hadn't killed them off for messing up their rolling }moderator edit{ trucks, my little ole rv was probably safe

We've all three (me, wife, and dog!) stayed in the truck the last few times...
and no issues other than the dog getting excited when they washed the truck!

There are a few different methods I've seen used...
some of the places have scaffolding along the top sides and a few guys are on there to do the high parts or there are popeye fore-armed young men, some of them handling LONG pressure washers from the ground.

They first pre-soak it, then spray it down to clean, and I usually get the rainex to finish...

pretty neat rain shower rinse system on some of the sites we've been...

A caveat though - our rv has full body paint so no decals, but our previous 5er had decals and still no issues.
But could see where high pressure and the wrong edge of a decal could cause an issue so I took pictures before and compared it after just to be sure.

Good luck and not trying to sell anyone on this, just what my lazy 'posterior' does !

If you are back by Christmas - we have a group staying at The Vineyards over Christmas 24th thru 28th sites 9, 10, and 15? not sure of the last one... come on out ! the rv's will be decorated !

Not that I know of --- I think they do have a spray on product other than rain-x but I've not looked into it...

Can't wait till Spring to wash mine. Winter stinks. Everytime I want to wash mine Frosty wants to come and play. I did get it clean before the weather hit.

Finished washing the Cruiser yesterday and started waxing it. In the past I have only waxed the front cap using a typical paste wax. But about 1 yr ago I switched to liquid ICE on my vehicles and also used that on the front cap. This was the easiest wash job removing bugs, etc from the cap I have ever done. Anyway, curb side is now also waxed with ICE, about 1 hr. to put it on and another hr. to buff it off.

For everyone that thinks this is too much work, it is nothing compared to my other job this fall, removing tree stumps. While some were removed the last few years, I still had over 100 needing removal. While the fire killed the oaks, it was not intense enough to kill the roots, so most of them put out new suckers. Many are now 4-6 ft. tall, but some are already 8-12 ft. tall. But anyway, mechanical removal wasn't an option. So, with a pick and chain saw they have been cut off at or below ground level. Job done.

I happen to find a fire dept charity car wash in Portage la Prarie , Manitoba a few years ago after 5 weeks of driving out west whth my old trailer ,which included 25 miles of crushed stone road (dusty). After the firemen/firewomen were done scrubbing the unit , this is what they did...
