19RD just bought - What Extras needed

We just purchased our 19RD this afternoon. This is our first Trailer and we have alot to learn. I was telling the wife on the way home that this was just the beginning of the things we will have to buy. Can I get from the more experienced Campers out there a list of what you consider some of the must have items we will need to purchase to make our camping this summer great.

first you will need a sewer hose, get extra lengths too and the fittings to couple them together if you need it. I have about 40ft of the things myself. Also a 30 amp electric cord to be able to run and extra length if you need it. Blocks of wood to raise the wheels up on one side if you need it. I have 2-3 2X6's as long as my tandems on the trailer and also a 5/4 piece of deck wood same length. Also blocks (I have 4x6's) to put under eacj stabalizer jack. Also have extr of these incase you end up on an incline. Dont forget a piece of wood for the front jack too. I used a piece of 2X6 left over from cutting my other pieces for the tires.

The old saying is--you go to camping world and buy one of everything.
There is quite a few places to get what a person needs a lot cheaper then camping world tho.

Wal-Mart sells the basics in the RV section of the Automotive Dept.

It really depends on the type of camping you plan to do. In 15 yrs of trailering we rarely get full hook ups ( our state parks don't have). We carry a short (25 ft) water hose in case we need to fill on the road and 1 section of sewer hose to dump on the way out. But lots of 2x6 pieces for leveling the wheels and tongue jack . I realy surprised no one said BEER/WINE.....

What ever you need to cook in your home you will need to get for camping. My wife said it was like having a second home with all the stuff we needed.

A water pressure regulator is a must. Glad to see it was first on the link above. And a water filter.

Also an electrical tester to check the outlet BEFORE you plug in.

We have found many campgrounds, mostly older ones, with low voltage, reverse polarity, etc. Not what your A/C or microwave would like. Ours stays plugged in to the kitchen outlet, with a 20amp-30amp adaptor on the shelf below just inside the door, ready to grab. That's the first thing we do, before unhitching.

A surge protector is also a good idea.

It is a like a second home in another way. You can (usually) deduct the interest you pay on the trailer.

Great answers from everyone. Thanks for the time you spent in replying to a newbies question. I have one more question if you have any advice on. We pick up the TT next Sat. Anything special we shold quiz them on during the walk though?

Pay close attention to what they teach you. Take notes and take your time and ask alot of questions.



I think someone else here on the foirum even video taped their PDI which I think for a new person is an excellent idea.

What we did - from the advice of a veteran - is my wife and I both went to the PDI; I watched, listened as he explained everything and my wife just constantly wrote down everything he said. That then became a heavily referenced document for the first few trips.

One of the best tips given that day was to light the stove for a second before trying to get the fridge to light on gas; this gets all the air out of the lines. Otherwise thefridgewill take forever to light, or just give up.

Oh - and it IS a second home; we pretty much bought duplicates of everything from sheets, towels to cooking utinsels, etc.

Yes - like a 2nd home. You need about everything you bought when you first moved out - plus all the RV stuff like hoses, extension cords, some basic tools, etc.

Thanks for all the great input.
We brought the New Zinger home today from the dealer about two hours away. There were 25 mph cross winds but the Zinger pulled with no problems behind our E-150 van. I guess it is now time to start making a new shopping list with some of the ideas everyone has passed along.

Can't wait to take it out this spring/summer

I think you'll love your Zinger. I'm moving into my second season with my 19rd. I'm constantly working on storage so that I can haul what I need, but have it out of the way. One thing that I found that has helped immensely while not taking up much space: I picked up one of those canvas and mesh shoe bags at Walmart...they come with hooks to hold them on the back (or front) side of a door. It fits perfectly on the bathroom door and you can keep just about anything in it from shoes to clothing to towels...and not taking up extra space! Enjoy!
