27RL- Whats everyone getting for mileage?

I'm just curious to see what kind of mileage people are getting with campers that are ballpark 6500lbs-7000lbs? I've been curious because a friend of mine says he gets about 10-12 mpg. I'm getting 7-9 mpg. Any suggestions on ways to increase mileage other than drive the speed limit and follow trucks?

I have a Sunset Trail @6500lbs. I get only 10-11 mpg (canadian gallons) with dodge hemi. Even at that I go o avg 55 mph highway. Guess just the price to live in the lap of luxury!

I have a Z1 271 BH, weight loaded 6900lbs. Last trip was 13 mpg imperial gallon. F150 with 4.6.
This was driving at 90kmh with several stops and starts for small towns.
Lucky I have the big fuel tank!

I have a 07 Zinger zf27rl witch weights 8500 lbs fully ready for camping. I get 7 to 9. towing 65 mph. I tow the east coast Upstate NY to Fl.

Thanks for the replies! I might be driving a little fast and it could be killing my mileage. I wouldn't mind 7mpg of I had a tank bigger than 26 gallons.

I noticed a big difference in my mileage backing down from 70 mph to 65 mph towing. It made the difference in averaging between 9 and 10 mpg to averaging between 10.5 and 11.5 mpg (depending on terrain). I wouldn't have dreamed 5 mph would make that much difference, but it did for me.

The mileage will really vary based upon tv, speed and driver acceleration as well as terrain. More hills equals less mileage. Faster acceleration or faster speeds also equal worse mileage. I have heard the sweet spot is at 55 mph but I only went that speed when my setup was white knuckling me to death. I wasn't concerned about fuel mileage then although my armada only gave me 6-8 mpg when towing. My diesel gives me around 11-12 mpg but I'm also towing at about 65-70 mph now.

We tow an ST28BH with an Armanda and get 10 - 12 miles per gallon depending on road conditions and wind. We generally average about 11 mpg. I can watch current and average mileage while driving and the main thing for us is keeping the engine in overdrive. If it has to kick down a gear out of overdrive and stay theredue to excessive speed or wind, then RPM goes upandgas mileage goes down. Although mpg will drop a little bit, hills don't have as much effect as many would think because although your engine has to work harder going up, it gets a bit or a break and can back off going down. Sustained wind effects us the most. Every tow vehicle, trailer and road is going to be a bit different, so find a speed that you feel comfortable with and that keeps the engine in it's sweet spot as much as possible. Hope that helps.

65 to 70 MPH is too fast for trailer tires, heat and speed not only costly to MPG it will eventually cause tire failure. Cut back you speed and acceleration for more MPG and safer travel. IMHO

I believe STtires are rated for 65mph MAX for sustained driving. Higher air pressure also keeps the heat down.

We have a 31BHS which weighs right at 9700 empty and up to 12,700 full. We get about 8 mpg's towing with a v10, ford dually, crew cab. Not exciting for a 2000 mile trip to Florida and back, but we love camping.

It's kinda like the guy in the Ferrari dealership asking about the gas mileage. The reply "If you have to ask you can't afford the car"

St tires are only rated for 65 MPH. I cruise at 62 or less and the fuel mileage is whatever it is. Not much I can do about it and if 1-2 MPG is a deal breaker?????

Right on both accounts Clif and Millie. I think talking about lower travel speeds benefits us all in all of the ways mentioned.

Yeah it's not about the money. 1-2 miles per gallon is the difference between 40+ miles to a tank. I hate having to stop every 2 hours to fuel up.

I drive 55MPH, retired and not in a hurry. I get 14-18mpg not pulling the RV and 11.5mpg pulling her. I didn't think that was to bad for a Ford F450.

Well, interesting topic. I have a 1500 gas model pickup with 5.3 engine (I hope that's right?) and get about 19 - 20 MPG highway. When towing my Zinger (7K pounds) I go to 9.5 to 10 depending on speed. My brother-in-law in Washington State tells me he gets 3 MPG better if he uses premium gas instead of regular. My trips aren't long enough to really test out that theory as I seldom use a full tank of the premium on one trip so can't verify. However, if you use multiple tanks of gas while traveling, this might be something to try. 3 MPG is worth the difference in cost. But, speed definitely makes a difference. I think I've seen 5 MPH equal 1 MPG difference.
