I would like to haul a small scooter on the back of our trailer. (ZT19RD)We are talking about 350 # max, including the carrier. I have seen Class III hitches designed to be welded to the rear frame of a trailer. The frame on the Zingerappears to be muchmore substantialthan our previous trailer.

Obviously, this is not something I would attempt myself, but would work with an area welding shop which has done this type of installation before. With the hitch weight of the trailer being on the high side, that part shouldn't be a concern. We have a friend who carries his Honda Metropolitan scooter on the back of his Scotty, apparently with no problems. I have also seen this setup on the road.

I want feedback from people who have actually done this. The good, the bad, whatever.

If you take it to a shop that knows what they are doing you should be OK. I plan on doing the same so that I can pull our Sea Doo some time. Let me know what they charge you for this.

First thing you should do is call Lippert and ask them what it will do to your frame warranty if you weld or bolt a receiver hitch to it. I wanted to do the same thing on our PP for 150lbs of bike rack and two bikes and was told it would void our frame warranty. That is a lot of weight at the back of the trailer but I am sure someone has done it.

I agree, that's a lot of weight.. While the carrier and scooter may only 350# what is the leveraged weight with that stuff hanging 3-4 ft off the rear. Also keep in mind the additional weight of other rear additional items (water, personal belongings, etc.) to keep withing the 12-15% tongue weight needed for proper distribution.

I'm in the process of building one now for a scooter or small deck off the back.

If a 40 gallon water tank is filled and placed behind the axels the weight distribution would be no different.

With water approx. 7lbs per gallon you'll only have 280# immediately behind the axle enclosed within the frame of trailer. With a 350# scooter / scooter rack combo, hanging off the rear, outside the frame of the trailer at least 2ft out, theirs gonna be some leverage in excess of 350#.

Now a full water tank and a scooter... Now we have some weight back there.

The one thing about the 19RD is that the tongue weight is on the high side. Over 15% from the factory, and that's assuming no water in the tanks or propane. The 40 gallon fresh water tank is in the nose. So keeping the tongue weight at 12-15 % would not be a problem. The GVW of the trailer is over 7000 # so that shouldn't be an issue either. (Certified empty weight from the factory as equipped is 3668 per the sticker)

I'm mostly concerned with the frame i.e. flexing, etc. I haven't talked to the welding shop which was recommended to me as yet. I have some warranty issues to check on, so will take the trailer by the welder on the way, but it won't be until next week.Edited by: rv-rick

If you do have the receiver hitch welded onto the frame and then start having frame issues (ie. cracking/breakage or flexing) get ready to pay for it out of your own pocket. Lippert won't touch it under the frame warranty once they know you have added the hitch and rack on the back. Trust me, I have check into this.

That is definitely on my mind. I don't want to mess up my brand new trailer. I think I'll have a better idea when I talk to the guys at the welding shop. They have done these in the past and should know if it is a good idea on this trailer.

I don't think you have to worry about lippert and their warrenty, even if you don't do anything they will try to void warrenty.

Pictures on here somewhere - search for KTM530.

How long have you had the carrier on the trailer?

How much weight do you normally carry?

Have you had any problems so far?

the pictures are a little big, so you can scroll left and right. the tubes are about 14" 's long. i picked them up from my local truck supply store. i decided on two tubes because its very stable.(no rocking back and forth). i built it for my tandem schwinn, but i've since added a front hitch on my truck and usually my bikes are up there. i now have my generator fire pit and sometimes fire wood on the rack. it can easily support a scooter. i used expanded metal for the deck to lighten it up a little. i did itright after i bought my trailer. i wasnt concerned about lipperts warranty. i've had my trailer at my dealer a few times and back at crossroads for warranty work...no problems.

I was hoping to use a conventional type 2" receiver in order to switch carriers; especially since I already have the carriers. One for my dual-sport.(to be)One for my wife's cart. And one for my "Hitch-Haul" for carrying misc. "stuff", such as a future generator or our lounge chairs which won't fit in the pass-through.

One of the carriers came with an anti-wobble attachment.Edited by: rv-rick

if you do use conventional style one recevier tube set up i would just add another strap going from the carrier to the trailer, for stability. let me know what you think of that anti wobble piece.

The anti-wobble thing won't work on my truck. It just slides off onto the hitch-haul tube. It doesn't wobble much anyway. I may try a different one when I get the bike and carry it.

There are several types I've seen online. The one I have came with the cart carrier from etrailer.com.

Someone asked earlier in the thread here how much it costs to add a trailer hitch to the back frame. I had one welded up (they hada portable set up so they came and did it at the house)and it ran about $240.00 that included the 2" tubing that ran the whole width of the frame, forthe hitchthey custom built for it. Then they welded the reciever tube to that and to the bumper so that it wouldnt bounce.

I then added another tube extender because I have a cargo box on the back of my trailer from Harbor Freight, attached to the bumper so the hitch had to be extended for the bike rack. It has about a 12" extended receiver added to it, it only came out about 3" without the extender.

I had mine welded on to hold my bike rack with three bikes on it. The rack is very light at only 36 lbs but I bet the whole thing with bikes weighs about 150# maybe a little more. We have a bike rack that has a hitch tightener in it too and that stops the side to side wobble. The bke rack is a Saris model is Thelma.

The next door neighbor followed me through some pretty bumpy city streets for about 5 miles and he said that nothing even flexed back there at all. (he also has a TT so he knew what to look for)

My TT is way out of warranty so I didnt hesitate to have it added. It seems nice and strong and I didnt lose that much off the tongue weight either. I checked mine with my Sherline toungue scale and fully loaded the TT tongue weight is about 870#. and the trailer wieghed at the scales was at 7400#Edited by: fixit5561
