As I said in my other post regarding towing with a Suburban, we've got a 32QB, and tow with a 1 ton dually. Not a problem. But...

We also have a 4 horse gooseneck horse trailer that we need to tow as well, and it's looking like we'll need to tow BOTH trailers at the same time. We wanted to get a 3/4 ton Suburban. Chevy states that the 3/4 ton has a 9600 lb towing capacity.

My 32 QB supposedly has a tongue weight of 1002 pounds, according to Crossroads' brochure (and the service folks at CR, who I think just read it straight from the brochure as well!). Not a problem towing it, since 10% - 15% of 9600 lbs is 960 - 1440 pounds as the max tongue weight capacity of the 'burb, right? WRONG!!! It would be, EXCEPT that the hitch receiver they put on the thing has a max WEIGHT DISTRIBUTING tongue weight of 1,000 pounds. WHAT?!?!? So, just change it out, right? Nope! The hitch receiver can't be swapped out of the Suburban either. It's built into the frame.

So..... looks like I'll be buying a second TRUCK instead of a Suburban. Bummer. This means I have to sell my Corvette, as the wife can't have a truck as her daily driver - she delivers flowers and needs the climate control inside the vehicle.

What about an Excursion ( SP ? ) Ford makes these and they are pretty stout as I know it. You can even get them some years with a diesel.

You have to figure out how to keep the Vette.

I'm sure there are many out there towing that sizetrailer with a3/4 Suburban. If your concerned about the hitch switch it out for a class V hitch. Might want to check on removing the stock hitch on the Burb...I'm pretty sure you can.

Class V Hitches

Class V hitches are for extra heavy loads greater than 10,000 lbs. GTW and more than 1,200 lbs. tongue weight. This type of hitch is usually a weight-distributing hitch. This type of hitch may have up to a 2-1/2 inch receiver with a 3/4-inch pinhole. Typical uses might be to tow a car trailer, horse trailer or unusually large boat or camper.Edited by: jgerni

jgerni - The hitch on the current model Suburbans can't be switched out. Checked that route already. It's built into the frame. Called Master Hitch (the local lord of hitches), and they say it can't be done. Still a bit baffled as to why GM did it that way, since the 1500 and 2500 trucks have normal frame mounted (not integrated) hitches.

I looked for used Excursions, and I'm wondering why Ford didn't continue the line. Used ones are going for pretty close to the same price as a new truck, especially the diesel ones. We're currently trying to find either a reasonably priced Excursion or a pre-2007 Suburban with the 8.1L engine, which supposedly had a lot more towing capacity. Or another truck...

My experience is with the 2000 to 2006 Suburban's. I didn't realize the hitch was integrated on the newer models (bummer). I'll vouch for the 8.1L engine...it's probably the best gas towing machine you could get. Won't pass many gas stations but she will surely pull a trailer. If you find one with 4.10 gears I think you would be very happy.

Yeah, we're on the lookout. So far those 8.1 suckers appear to sell for what a new 2500 pickup goes for, regardless of mileage. Same on the Excursions. Man, I wish someone still made a BIG SUV that could SAFELY tow big trailers!

i am towing my 2008 32 ft zinger with a 2003 8.1 surburban and i have not had any problems with my stock hitch yet. this year you could change the hitch on the truck if you want to but why fix whats not broken.i would think that both our trailers weigh about the same with the same tongue weight maybe you could find an older surburban like mine . you could also try posting this question on rv.net and get some diffrent views on this dont give up yet on the surburban it tows great

i have the same trailer and i think, the same suburban.
my suburban is a 97 2500 and I pull mine fine (for the most part).
It doesn't get out of its own way and I get about 8 mpg but I get there. The only thing I did was go a little heaver on the weight distribution bars - i think i went to 1200 lbs.
how far are you travelling?
