270BH or 28BH

Looking at both 270BH and the 28BH with the two slides on the 28BH concern about towing the additional 900 pound will be pulling with my Suburban (#7900 tow cap). Anybody pulling either camper with a Suburban? What is one of the better hitches?

If your tow capacity is only 7900 lbs go with the 270BH. You'll be close to the max after propane, battery, and gear in the storage areas. Plus your tongue weight will likely be close to 750 lbs loaded (10-12% GTW).

The 28BH is listed at 1200lbs heavier dry weight than the 270BH and the tongue weight (792lb) is over the max your Burb is likely rated for.

The 270BH is a really nice unit and will be a much more enjoyable and safer tow experience. Also I use an Equalizer 4pt WD hitch (1200/12K rating). It works great. Also use a Prodigy P2 brake controller which is also great.

Usually on Burbs the issue will be payload. Let us know what your yellow sticker states on your inside door jamb. I suspect it will be pretty low and the 270BH with be the better choice for you.

Just remember that the 7900# tow rating does not mean you can tow 7900#'s. You have to look at payload too. For example my tow rating is 9300 lbs and I tow a 6000# dry model and wouldn't want to tow anything heavier. I am also right at my 1598# payload with passengers, limited cargo, and tongue weight with WD hitch. Payload gets chewed up quickly with 1/2 tons.

I'd suggest leaving a 25% buffer for tow limit when deciding on an unloaded trailer weight. I know this sounds like a lot but after you tow out you'll thank me. So as an example for a 7900 lb tow rating that would mean a max unloaded trailer weight of 5925 lb which leaves 1975 lbs for determining cargo (not that you want to reach that limit).

1475 pounds is payload

So you would be around 8000lbs loaded with the 28bh. Your tongue weight which comes off your payload number of 1475 will be approx. 900-1000lbs. This will leave you only approx 500lbs for yourself, wife, kids, pets and gear in your burb. Cutting it very close and will make for a less than comfortable tow experience.

I've used the equalizer hitch on my old trailer and now have the Blue Ox. I like the Blue Ox a lot more than the Equalizer. So much easier to put on and off. And it doesn't make all the noise like the equalizer. It sounded like I was twisting the frame. Don't push the Suburban too much. I had an 07 Suburban 1500 LTZ with the towing package towing my old 30 FT trail light from Florida to Washington DC. When I got back and changed the oil it looked like I had a marble on the drain plug.
