Axle flip

Any thoughts on flipping the axles, pro's & cons? I had a quote to flip my double axle trailer for around $600

Well the first question is what is your reason for the flip? Do you need more ground clearance or are you trying to level the trailer for towing?

When you raise any vehicle you also raise the center of gravity and that may affect the way it handles.

If you are trying to level for towing why not get a drop head for the hitch. It would be cheaper than the flip.

Also if you add your camper year - make- and model it helps others to help you.

Newer axles have a curve to them so flipping would cause tires to tilt" How about putting axles under springs if they ar eover . Or if front and back shackles have an extra hole below the one in use , just move spring to that hole. Or get a equilizer that is taller...the last idea worked on my last trailer.

I agree with Harley. If by "flipping" the axles you mean moving them from over the spring - "under slung" to under the spring - "over slung" then yes that will raise the frame for more ground clearance but you still have the same clearance between the ground and the axle unless you put on taller tires.

With a straight axle you can simply "flip" the axle when you move it under the spring. With a arched axle the "spring perch" has to be moved from the bottom to the top of the axle to maintain the arch and the alignment. With the straight axle you would also have to remove the brake backing plate and rotate it 180 so the brakes are not upside down.

I’m looking at doing the same to my Z1 mainly for clearance as my axle u bolts are only about an inch and a half from the frame and have hit a few times once pinching the propane line the last time it cut the brake wiring. Crossroads sees no problem so they refuse to fix it so after losing trailer brakes coming out of the mountains I plan on fixing it right. I have already rerouted everything out of the way but I still don’t want the frame damaged.

Have you thought about cutting the excess bolt length off. You only need three or four threads showing beyond the nut.

It’s the “u” that hits the frame the threaded end points down the axle itself has hit the frame too.

In that case I think the springs are shot or to light to handle the load.

Yes, springs may be the problem. My 3500# springs were replaced with 4400# springs as the tires were rubbing on the bottom of the trailer and I was 700# s under weight. May look into that.

That’s the problem but Crossroads said there is nothing wrong that’s the way it was supposed to be.
Sad as it is 2 years old and has been in the shop for about 6 months total and only used for 6 trips. I will be taking it to a shop I trust and having the axles and springs upgraded.
