Gas Question

On our outing this weekend, when leveling the RV, I got to the back and smelled gas. I looked down and the rear quick disconnect is gone / missing and was broken off.

I thought it had a regulator on it, but I may be wrong and it was just a 1/2" Quick Connect with cover on it like under the sink. I went to Home Depot and put a 1/2" cap on it with tape so we could use the other appliances.

Can someone with an ST290BH take a picture at the rear of the bumper? I can't believe that a point that low they would leave exposed, it was hanging down.

Thanks for your time and effort!

Are you looking for a picture of the 290BH? Or a 290QB? The reason I asked is, in your signature info you have a ST Super Lite 290QB but in your question you are asking for 290BH.. Is that a typo error? If you are looking for the 290QB, I can help with that.

Yes the one in my signature is the one I need a picture of, sorry for the confusion. My rear bumper quick connect is gone. not sure what happened to it.

Thinking the QD and the valve are screwed onto 1/2" pipe, then either it wasn't tight, and fell off, or somebody else thought they needed one more than you. :-( It seems like you would have lost a lot of propane during the time the pipe was open.

That is what is weird the fitting is gone, but the tank was not empty. Either I never turn the gas on and it fell off or someone was nice enough to turn the gas off and swipe it, not sure which one. I had to go to home depot, get a cap so we could cook with has inside because of a burn ban.

Isn't there a safety feature built into the valve on the tank that shuts the gas off in a situation like that? (Where a sudden big leak can occur)

I have no idea if so, that would explain a lot.

Yes I have seen many threads on it with 5th wheels. Someone turns the gas on to quick, the system thinks it's a leak and shuts down. Probably prevented you from loosing all your propane

I'm not sure I was right on this.
What I have found is there has to be a connection onto the bottle before it will allow gas to come out. Opening the valve on the bottle will not release any LP unless it's hooked up to a gas line.

Hose End Connection

The hose end connection on either a fill hose or appliance supply line is designed to work only with OPD equipped cylinders. For the OPD valve to operate with the handwheel open, the hose end connection must be securely attached. The picture to the left shows a hose end connection. Notice the elevated brass fitting is surrounded by acme threads. When attached to a cylinder valve and tightened, the brass fitting will push the internal valve open and allow gas to flow out of the cylinder to the appliance, if the handwheel is in the open position. This fitting must be in place for gas to flow out of the cylinder. Otherwise, turning the handwheel will not produce the intended result.

The regulators also have a safety feature built in. When they sense a sudden surge, they limit the flow of gas to a very tiny amount.

The fitting popping off likely triggered the automatic activation of a surge protection device within the propane regulator. If, for example, you turn on the tank valve before you fully turn off each of the burner knobs on the grill the surge protector will likely sense a leak and activate. The fuel flow will be very low. The remedy is to turn everything off, disconnect the tank, and reconnect everything before starting over.

Thanks Ted

Curious - was there any sign of damage like it was struck by something on the road?

Our LP quick connect hangs down, too, and I could possibly see something striking it.

Yes thank you, so no regulators just quick disconnects. Perfect! I for some reason thought I saw a regulator back here, guess not!

Dealer is looking at it and going to see what they are going to do. Might be with my dime but I have no idea where to get a 1/2" quick disconnect for gas.

You should be able to get them from an LP place. Also a dealer should have them. If not look on Amazon. Camco handles that stuff.

Where in Texas are you, I ordered the quick connect and long hose for a BBQ on the redwood, but never installed it --- it's in the spare garage (somewhere )

BUT, after 15 years of storage, I did have a 16' run of wire shelving fall from too much weight, so who knows where it is
