Moving batteries inside

Hi everyone,

I own a 2007 Sunset trail. I don't know about the more recent models but mine packs the battery on the trailer tongue, outside.

I was planing on adding a second battery but was thinking I could move them inside where the weather could not get at them. Also I didn't want to deal with the hassle of having to fit them outside, I cannot find proper storage boxes for two that fits at this time.

So I discovered that the main electric cables seems to all end under one of the kitchen table's seat. I suspect I could just uncover the right ones, sit my batteries in a proper case and that's it. Only I have one concern: the gas heater is also housed under that seat...

Batteries emit gasses when charging and having a flame nearby is usually a bad idea. Although in this case the furnace's fire and sparks are vented and connected with the outside.

Anyone of you have tried that already?

I would think that it is a bad idea....for a number of reasons.

I wouldn't. There should be plenty of room on the tongue and they make individual battery boxes that you could still wire them in parallel.

Myself, I would never ever consider putting the flooded cell batteries inside a camper. Not only do you run the risk of an explosion, but also the smell that comes off of them when they are charging is not anything I would want to be subjected to.

I have seen where they have used the AGM battery inside, but those are a gel cell, and completely sealed.

Not to hijack op's question but, living in Fl & our rain forest rains i need to mty the battery box after these rains. Anything wrong with drilling drain holes in bottom of box? Location is on tounge behind lp tanks.

Not a thing wrong with that idea. In fact it's a good idea for outside battery boxes.

I drilled several holes in each of our battery boxes. It works great.


I added a second battery to the tongue A frame. I found the second battery would not fit in the original battery area. I added brackets I had lying around the garage to lift the battery up and over the trailer frame. I mounted the brackets to the original battery trailer holder and bolted the battery box to these brackets. No holes were drilled into the actual trailer frame.
