New (almost) ST270BH owner

Hi,
After looking around for months, I'm seriously considering purchasing an ST270BH.
My family loves camping and this seems perfect for us (Two kids, 9 and 6)
This is the first RV I have ever purchased.
I'd be pulling it with a 5.7l Tundra, which based on the specs seems as though it would be no problem for the Tundra.
I'd like to hear opinions about the 270 from other owners, or Sunset Trail in general.
Also, if anyone out there is towing an ST270 with a Tundra or any other 'half-ton' truck I'd like to hear if the 270 is a good match with a half-ton truck in terms of ease of pulling, maneuvering, etc...

Thanks everyone!
Mike

I tow my ST25RB with a Silverado 1500. It tows it just fine. A little more power would be nice, but not necessary. Your Tundra should be just fine.

We looked at the 270BH initially, but the wife liked the 290QB better. Our kids are the same age and it's nice to have extra beds in 290QB if they bring friends. The 270BH is a very nice unit though and the extra bathroom door is a cool feature. You will have no issues towing it. I tow ours with my '12 Titan Crew 4x4 without trouble and the 270BH is 3-4 ft shorter and 500-600 lbs lighter than ours. We love ours, but I will say it has crossed my a few times that it would be nice to have less length squeezing thru some tighter campgrounds. I say Do It!

Oh yea, and I also use an Equalizer 1200/12K Weight Distribution hitch. I'm looking to add a Roadmaster Active Suspension system and better shocks this year and E-rated 10 ply tires next year just to make the overall tow experience better.

As you can see in my signature I have a 1/2 ton and a Sunset Trail, and love both! Feel free to ask anything you like.

My previous truck was a '06 Titan LE Crew Cab, great truck!

I have a 2010 tundra 5.7 4x4 with 4:30 gearing and tow haul. The only problem is the gas consumption. I use the eaz lift sway control and elite round bar 14,000 1,400 to pull with .I have had to put clip on mirrows to help see around the camper. Did not come with tow mirrors, other than that no problems. I would like a set of firestone air bags to help with the sag in the rear. I am very happy with my set up, just not the mpg!!
Feel free to ask any questions. My kids are about the same 10 and 8 and we love our unit. Good luck

Another model you might consider that pulls very well with a half ton truck is the ST28BH. love the extra large bunks and the apposing slides give you a lot of living space. our tongue weight is around 1000lbs fully loaded and the trailer is around 7200lbs loaded. I use the Equalizer 1000/10000 WD hitch

Yea they are, this is my 3rd one . Should have kept 1st one until it rusted to dust but it's a long story. It's a tow beast for a 1/2 ton.

My Titan didn't have the tow package so it really limited my options in TT's. I went to local Nissan dealer and could not work out a deal on a new one. Ended up going with the F150, very happy with the decision but still think the Titan's are a pretty cool line of trucks! Wish Nissan would embrace the line as much as the owners did! Use to be a member of TitanTalk it is a great forum if you are not familiar with it.

Yep I'm on that site daily. Great place to learn and share, much like this site. I believe for '15 they are planning a turbo diesel engine.

I pull my 2013 Z-1 271bh with our Armada. The old Ezlift hitch sucked!, Dam TT was ALL over the road over 30 mph. Got the HA and have had no issues since. I am very concerned that mt hitcvh has been sitting in the Dealers lot for over 4 months and they didnt cover it. I even asked them to and they replied to me yesterday when I asked about its condintion that if I had left them something to cover it they would have.... Here we go again with the Dealer crap!

st270

We bought a st270 in October last year and have only had it out one time. We like all the space and the trailer seems well built. I also have a 07 tundra with the 5.7. I live in SC and pulled it to pigeon fordge up the mountain and down the mountain and it pilled fine no problems the truck handled the weight and the road great. Don't hesitate about either the truck or camper do it and go have fun

well, went to get the TT from the dealer and low and behold my Hensley Arrow was missing! I was very specific when I said Do Not Take The Hitch Off! but of course they didnt listen. so, I am going back on Wed. I cannot imagine they know how to install it properly but I am hoping as it cost a bit and a whole day to have it installed last summer. I also have to check the serial number t make sure they give me my hitch. I cannot understand why it has to be so difficult to get good service? I didnt pay with Monopoly money.....

Hello,

Take my words with a grain of salt. My wife and I traded in our Shadow Cruiser 280 QBS this fall for a 2014 270BH. We love the layout (we have two boys, 6 and 8) and what appears to be better quality of the Sunset Trail.

However, we haven't been able to actually use it yet.

As for towing, I towed it home with a 2006 f150, 5.4l, 3.73 axle, (equalizer hitch) and it towed wonderfully. I have no doubt your Tundra will handle it with no problems (I'm assuming you're within specs, of course - I didn't notice the year of your truck or any of the other good info).

We have the Sunset Trail 28bh and absolutely love it. We purchased ours last August and have been camping in it six times already. The quality has been everything we expected.

As for the towing. Be careful on some forums, the tow police will come get you. If you don't know what I mean you will soon find out. People who think they are tow experts and strike fear in you every chance they get. Having said that just make sure your truck is capable of towing what you purchase by the numbers. If you don't have the exact numbers get them from your truck manufacturer. We did and found out we could tow more that what we thought.

I have a half ton Ram with a blue ox sway pro. It tows the tt just fine. My only issues towing are if my speed gets up to near 65 in traffic I can sometimes feel some push/pull but nothing major.

Good luck with your purchase! Sunset Trail is great tt.

Mike,

I previously had a 30ft Kodiak Dutchman and I just bought a ST32BH (dry weight 7,124) and my Tundra pulls it just fine. I will say that I highly recommend getting some sort of "lift bags" for the leaf springs. I have Load Lifter 5000. The Tundra works great, but the rear end squatted pretty bad before I installed the bags. I also have a Weight Distribution hitch. I will tell you I get horrible gas mileage with the Tundra (about 8 MPG)! If I stay off the throttle a bit, I can get up to 9 MPG. All and all, the Tundra is a hoss! Toyota built in Texas and getting it done...
