Weight Distribution System

I am buying a 2013 ST Reserve 30RE. Plan on pulling it with a Dodge Ram Hemi (dealer says should be adequate). I currently have the Reese Dual cam WD/Sway control system on my old unit and dealer will install it on the 30RE. Question...... is it really needed, or should the "standard" WD be Ok. Just wondering if anyone with a unit this size, towing with a 1/2 ton, has experienced sway problems without sway control?

I'm not saying the dealer is telling you what you want to hear, but, I would check the brochure for the truck and see the weight limits for the engine and rear end you are buying. Also, do you know what the dry weight and tongue weight is for your new camper? They should be within the truck specs.

I have a 2012 30RK and I pull it with a 2012 Ford F-150 platinum with the ecoboost engine and have no trouble. All the trailer weights are within the truck limits. It is coupled with a Reese WD hitch.

I'm not saying this to be "nit-picky", but down the road if you have trouble and it comes out that the truck was under-rated for the trailer, that could void things like warrenties and insurance.

Yes, according to the Dodge site the max trailer weight is 10,030 for that truck/engine/rear end. The "dry" weight of the 30RE is 6226. So I'm not overly concerned in this regard. However, I'm more interested in knowing if I will need sway control. I would rather just use the Reese WD system (bars and chains up to the trailer). Do you have sway control or just the bars and chains?

I have a 30re , I would get the sway control. Not to say the trailer pulls bad, but wind and trucks passing will bother you.

I pull with an avalanche and a Gmc 2500 hd. I went ahead and got a Hensley Arrow, couldn't be happier.

Hello , General rule, anthing that is over 28ft, for safty issues , you should use the sway bar.. I have both for my unit. Hope this helps.. Happy 2013 camping !!

I have a 2012 st25rb and I pull it with my 2012 ram 1/2 ton. I have a pro series weight distribution system but no sway control. The hemi in the truck has more than enough power to pull it but I have had the wind and semis push me around a little. I am going to add sway control this year. Hopefully will take the momentary scare factor out of towing. These trailers are pretty heavy and no matter what the dealers tell you they are borderline with 1/2 tons. My opinion.

You defintely want to keep your Reese dual cam system. Had a friction sway control on a 29 ft Sprinter TT pulled by a 1/2 ton GMC pickup. Had a lot of sway from trucks and buses. Put the dual cam system on and it was like nite and day. Trailer settled right down.

I have 2008 Ram 1500 with hemi. Had bars/chains with old camper. When I bought ST 31BH I upgrade to EZ2 tow package. Eliminate all my sway next to trucks and wind unless really windy days. I agree with anyone that says always error on the side of caution. You are pulling a nice TT and your family. I'm so glad I upgraded.

Definitely get the WDH with integrated sway control, you wont regret it. If you get to the point of regretting not having it, it will be too late. Typically over about 26-28 ft you want integrated sway control. Friction sway bars are for trailers shorter than that. In terms of weight, double check your payload sticker on the door against a loaded tongue weight (13-15% of the loaded TT weight), if the loaded tongue weight and the overall TT weight are under your adjusted specs (adjusted for options and weight of passengers/gear, etc) then you should be just fine on weight.

I recently purchased a 2014 33bd and tow it with my 2010 F150 crewcab longbox. I had the dealer install the Equilizer, and I installed Firestone airbags. It is pushing the limit for my truck, but it tows if very well, and rides perfectly level. I had a slight amount of sway in 25-30 knot crosswinds over 65 mph. Slowed down to 60 and it was smooth sailing. Semis and busses passing had little effect. I would not even want to try towing over 55 without a WD hitch.

We had a 2010 Ram 1500 Sportwith dual sway and ittowed our 31bh awesome. I traded my 2010 for a 2013 Sport still with the dual sway and it has very little sway. I would definately keep the dual sway. better safe then sorry.

Hey p4l,

Sounds like you have done your homework. I have the sway control as well. It is cheap insurance. I would have that incorporated in the hitch. My truck has it as well.

Sorry for my brain freeze. I do not have a Reese brand hitch. I havean Equalizerthat has the 4-point sway control built in along with the WD. No chains, has bars. Have not had any trouble. As another post said, if its over 28 or so feet, get the sway control.
