air compressor

What are you guys carrying around to air up your tires when traveling?

I don't have a whole lot of room/height in the front storage, so I'm limited to the physical size of anything I put there.

I've tried some of the small air less compressors and they don't cut the mustard. Neither does the Campbell Hausfield inflator that I tried. That thing just hit the garbage can when we got home from the last trip.

Depends on how high a psi your requirements are...

When I had the 5'er with the air bag in the hitch, I used this one for the light duty stuff. very small and easy to use.

For heavier duty stuff I still have this one and it has been acceptable for all but the large 22.5 tires on the class A. has adjustable psi and accessory kit that I only wanted to add a second extension hose to give me more reach.
but for the 22.5 tires I heard great things about viair and tried this one... was very disappointed, returned it after one try even on the jeep tires !

so I end up going to the truck stops for quick fill ups on the coach.

I have the VIAIR 88P. It has a max of 120 psi. It's quiet and fills fairly quick. It's small and weighs little. Of course for adding large amounts of air I do it at home with a large compressor, but this model of VIAIR does well for top offs. It has alligator clips to attach to a battery. Costs less than $70.

I also purchased an extension hose for further reach. Kinda like the screw on end to attach to valve stem.

A lot of people use the Porter cable pancake compressor. Good to 150psi, takes up little room. Home depot has them for 129.00. I use a Viair with 10 gal tank mounted under the truck that works great for my 125psi tires. Also run my airbags on the truck and PINBOX from the cab controls. Not cheap though

20160926_130854.jpgI put a wire shelf in the front srorage & put the Porter Cable pancake compressor on it with a retractable hose reel in the propane bottle compartment, works great.

Picked up a Rolair years ago. But for the road, I had to upgrade from a 1000 Honda, too a 2000 Honda to run it.

Lloyd-

I too tossed the Campbell Hausfield inflator in favor of the one made by Ryobi. Uses the interchangeable batteries with my Ryobi portable drill which always travels with me. Has worked fine for the trailer, truck, and especially bike tires. Requires a little patience plus don't run it for longer than 10 minutes (as the owner's manual states) or it will fail permanently. Yes, I found out the hard way by not fully reading the manual on the first one I bought.

That is the one I was trying to think of the name. I had seen a write up on it some time back. It has pretty good reviews but it's a little short on CFM and the duty cycle is pretty short. (15 %)
Have you used it enough to be able to say if that is a problem? Has it heated up on you?

Shane, I have looked at those for a long time. It won't fit in my side door, and not sure I can sacrifice the room up front for it. They are a nice unit tho.

Gary, that is a nice compressor! I little pricey, but definitely a nice one. I will have to see just where it would fit.

You can always install the Viair like I did for 1000.00 and be done with it

My Craftsman 3 Gallon has held up well for 12 years so far. When we camp in the sand I have to air down all the tires to get in without getting stuck. Even with this compressor it takes some time to get the trailer tires back to 80# and the truck tires up to their proper PSI.

Sears.com

We use it at camp to inflate all of our motorcycle tires too.

At home I have the reel with 150' so I can air up the truck and trailer parked in front of the house.

And just as important as the compressor is this inflator / gauge combo. It really speeds things up.

If you were regularly to fill tires from flat to full this would not be good as it needs a rest to cool down after about ten minutes. It does get hot. If you are going to add 5-20 lbs in each tire, I think it's good. I've only had to use it a couple times to add a few lbs of air so far because I haven't aired down on my trips. The pluses are its small, quiet, and fills fairly fast for its size. The screw on is nice and it has a gauge. The rubber feet keep it still. I don't particularly like having to hook up to a battery, but I guess that's what's required to get a better performance than the plug in 12 v.

I can't see any good reason to do that. I don't have, or need air bags.

Steve I decided to get a VIAIR 88P.
It arrived today from Walmart, and like you said it was less then $70, with the extension hose.
I just tried it on the truck. Went from 50psi to 70psi in just a little over 3 min. I think that is pretty darn good for a little rig like that. I also think it's a keeper.

I really wanted the one like Gary has, but couldn't justify it.

Thanks again everybody for your feed back.
