I'm really getting tired of all the blown tires on the road ways. When is those retreads going to become illegal. While traveling down I-80 this weekend tire pieces are all over the place. When your in 5 lanes of bumper to bumper traffic pulling a camper there's not much you can do to avoid flying tire pieces as you can see in the front of my truck.

when we went to the rally we traveled I-80 from almost as east as I-81 in PA (about 500miles). I never seen so many before. Theres not nearly as many up here in Canada....
And don't get me started on I-81. My unit took a real beating on that rough interstate.

When traveling I-10 from El Paso to Kerrville enroute to the Texas Rally I noticed a TDOT worker with truck picking up those thrown retread pieces. First time I've ever seen anyone actually doing that. Guess they were doing a pretty good job as I didn't notice much of a problem after the rally onward on I-10 to Louisiana. Go TDOT!

Expect it to get worse unfortunately As you all may have noticed as you cruise down the Interstates, more and more "weigh stations" are always closed. Budget cuts by feds and the states are causing most of this. I am one who believes they can pay for themselves with the fines they deliver, but lawmakers don't agree. So, we are in a reactive instead of a proactive state. Without those stations to check not just weight but bad tires, this will continue to get worse. With the price of fuel (which by the way deisel is now cheaper than unleaded in WI) and other costs, truckers are running them to the belts. As you lumber down the road if you are near are rig and hear an unusaul whine, either pass him or get back, a good sign one of his tires is on the verge.

Man Chris that could have gone south real quick.
We had same situation when we left the rally for Indianapolis. Going down 69 there was a blow tire all over our lane. Fortunately the very light traffic enabled a swift lane change.
You didn't scratch the Dodge, did you?

Yeah- you showed us those at the Rally...still can't believe that happened!I was trying to lighten mood alittle as I admired your truck! We are glad no damage(or anything else). I told my wife you are probablybeyond fed up with road debris dealing with this twice!
Happy trails this weekend - if you are headed out!

Supposedly there is a tax that funds clean up of the retreads on a state level.
It should be outlawed and I can not understand why it is tolerated. If you notice little pieces of rubber bouncing down the highway watch out cause a retread is getting ready to cut loose. Seen it happen many times.

Just food for thought. Everyone blames retreads BUT retreads when they separate leave just the rubber that was supposedly stuck to the old casing. Most of what you see has steel fibers in it which are not from retreads but virgin tires that failed, not retreads. Retreads do fail but don't blame them for all the garbage you see. YMMV

Retreads are the major contibutors period. I would agree to disagree on this one.

Did you have a weight distribution setup and sway control on that wrecked trailer - having a hard time telling from the photo?

I have a couple questions about the accident.
Do you know what your tongue weight % was? Also what kind of brake controller were you using? How fast were you going prior to the accident?
As for WD I believe I can see one of the WD bars on the ground in one of the pictures.
Most important glad no one was hurt.
Looking at the first posting with the tire in your grill. It looks to me like that tire has steel belts in it. If so it was not a retread. Just this weekend I had to dodge at least three tire treads almost a big as the one lodged in the grill of the OP. I was lucky there was light traffic and I was able to miss them.

I had the weight distribution setup but not the sway control. The only thing left holding the trailer to the truck was one safety chain.

I don't know what my tongue weight % was, but I do know I wasn't over weight. I also had super springs on the truck.
I'm not positive on my speed, but I'm pretty sure it was around 60mph because that's what I usually travel and traffic was kinda heavy at the time.
I have a Hopkins Agility Proportional brake controller.
Hope this answers you questions.
