Here's one for the record books. Here in New Brunswick, Canada, a hunter in the Acadian Peninsula shot what he thought was a large coyote (common here in NB) Turns out the critter was a 68 pound pure wolf (verified through DNA testing by Wildlife). The last wolf sighted and shot in NB (officially recorded) was in 1876.

I think they have all moved down here. Lots of black bear harvested every year. Now they are in the process of a season on wolves.

Considering that no wolves have been sighted in New Brunswick in over 130 years, DNR is now investigating whether the young, male wolf was not actually someone's "pet" or an illegally confined wolf from some other jurisdiction which may have been introduced to the environment either accidentally or intentionally. It is most unlikely that a wolf travelled all the way from northern Quebec, across New Brunswick to the Acadian Peninsula. I don't think any wild animal would trek that far without encountering some other animals or humans.

You'd be surprised how far wolves will wander. The male mentioned in this story http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may...f-or7-20120511 wandered from the Blue Mtns in northeast Oregon all the way to Northern California. He was wearing a GPS collar which allowed the wildlife biologists to follow along on his journey.
We have had at least 3 wolf packs establish here in Washington in the past few years after many decades with no known wolves in the state. The most recent reports are a pack being established in the Teanaway area where I spend a lot of my camping time. Haven't heard or seen them yet, but hope to sometime soon.

I sure would love to see wolves in the Province again, a well as the Eastern Cougar, but I really don't think that will happen any time soon. Although, the Peregrine Falcon has been brought back form the brink here.

Heck, just a few years ago a Cougar was shot and killed in Chicago and it was verified that it wasn't the same one seen around Janesville WI. either.
