pets in the cold

With all of this freezing cold weather, don't forget to bring your pets inside. If you can't bring them in then provide adequate shelter with some straw in it to help keep them warm. If you know people who can't afford these things for their pets many local rescues are trying to help by loaning out dog houses and straw for outside or some inside kennels until the weather breaks. I know Shirleys Angels boxer rescue in Winchester VA Is offering assistance in western VA and some parts of WEst Va. I believe boxer butts and other mutts near Asheville NC is trying to help also. in Kentucky, the humane society is offering free boarding to outside dogs until jan 9. must be current on bordetella and rabies. http://www.khspetresorts.com There are lots more out there nationwide for those that need help. Stay warm and snuggle with your pets!

yeah, my new puppy has been trying to claim the bed and couch. He hasn't succeeded yet. He does however steal blankets despite having 3 beds of his own in the house and multiple doggie blankets of his own.

That was before they were domesticated and lost their survival skills.

Wasn't it the other way around also, how did we survive without them? Three Dog Night, etc. Now that we have 'advanced' and don't need dogs to help our daily survival, they still need us. That, I believe is the message. And we still benefit thru handicapped, police and security dogs, etc.

I agree 100%. We have a schnauzer in the house (rescue), and a "mutt" in the backyard (rescue). 5 outside cats (2 original rescue). If your pet is an inside animal they are conditioned to the inside. Same with your outside pet.

Outside dog has a 4x6 dog house complete with doggy door and lined in the walls and floor with straw. She is happy. I put a heat lamp in the henhouse. Cats shelter in the barn.

All are fat and happy and spoiled rotten.

Here's my big bad 100lb Chocolate Lab and my son. I usually have a hard time getting him to come back inside, but not in these temps he goes out and does his thing and comes back in. I have seen labs jumping in ice cold water to fetch ducks, but I can't see this one doing that. As you can tell he has a rough life.

Tim- he is properly sheltered and bedded down so yes you are right, he's fine. I'm currently helping my coworker get her neighbors dog into rescue. He is a cocker spaniel tied up in a dog crate with a tarp over it and a blanket in it. It was 8 degrees here this morning with the windshield, it was -6. This dog was an inside dog until 2 months ago. That owner is looking to give the dog away too. Working to get him some help.

That said my dog (rescue puppy) started his life outside with no shelter other than a car to huddle under. Now at almost 7 months old he is so spoiled that when I took him outside to potty last night with his coat on, I had to practically drag him out the door and off the porch. When we came I , he stole my blanket off my bed and rolled himself up in it.

No surprise there, rescue dogs have no desire to return to their prior living conditions, even for a few min. of necessary business. My previous rescue dog was always with us, traveling I could stop the truck, take her out even in good weather and she was done in 10 seconds and heading back to the truck, not wanting to be discarded again.

What you have said Larry is really true. Our Sunshine who we got last year, Makes certain that she stays near Hoover when we stop for a potty break, than she is the first one back in the truck. This last Saturday we had to take her to the vet for her heart worm check up (She beat them) we took her by her self and she trembled the entire time on the way there and in the Vets office. Dashed to the car on the way out, and would not leave Hoover or Rainbows side for the next 24 hours
