Ruined Weekend!!

First weekend of April, our favorite Corps of Engineers campground opens for the season, our favorite spot reserved, trailer packed and ready to go. I was just running over to the store for a couple quick last minute items and WHAM!

Sitting at a stoplight and some woman, texting while driving, slams into the back of me. My Centerline TS hitch is buried in her engine bay and my receiver is bent. No other damage to my truck, and most importantly nobody hurt, but we won't be going anywhere this weekend....

That hitch into the front of her car might teach her not to text while driving...which is illegal here in Ontario.

You can only hope a lesson would be learned, but some people are thicker between the ears, then any other place on their body.

Don't forget to sue her or her insurance co. for your lost weekend among other things. That may help with the lesson.

My wife always hated it that I left the hitch on my truck even when I wasn't towing (this was back when we had a bumper pull), but that thing totally saved my bumper. I was rear-ended FIVE TIMES in that old truck. Every time it absolutely destroyed the other car's bumper and I never had a scratch. The only exception was when I had just had a temporary tooth placed and the impact popped the tooth out. I had to turn around and get the tooth reinstalled.

I'm so sorry that your weekend is ruined. I'm glad you weren't hurt.

It is illegal here, in Missouri, but didn't seem to stop her.

Wow! Sorry to hear that! People who text and drive seem to feel that nothing is going to happen to them. Is driving so boring these days that people have to find diversions elsewhere while behind the wheel?

In Ontario they recently toughened the penalties for distracted driving with higher fines and demerit points, but these people are difficult to catch in the act. Eventually distracted driving will become as socially unacceptable as DUI, but that has not happened yet.

I hope you get it fixed soon so you can start camping!

Happy to hear you are ok. In Illinois you cannot either talk on the cell phone or text and drive. I see people doing it all of the time. You just can't legislate against stupidity. As Forest Gump said "Stupid is as stupid does" or something like that.

Urban legend in Illinois is that it's illegal to drive with a hitch sticking out of your receiver. It's not true, it didn't pass. I always take mine out though since I don't want my ankle/knee to be inflicted with that kind of pain if I forget it's there.

I had it in one time when a woman rear ended me at walmart, shook my truck. She backed up and ran away. I got out and no damage to my truck. Antifreeze was running out of her little car and I'm not sure how far she got.

I had a guy run into my parked truck in a parking lot. My hitch busted his grille out and scarred his bumper. I came out of the store to find him trying to take my hitch. I walked up on him and asked what he was doing.

He looked up at me and said "Look at this. Some jerks left his hitch in his truck and it destroyed my car. I'll show him. I'm going to take his hitch."

Now, knowing that my hitch had a locking pin, I just said "Oh." I walked around the truck, got in and drove away while he was trying to steal my hitch. He jumped up and started screaming something about the cops... I waved goodbye to him.

Yet DUI is still very common. I don't think it is considered as unacceptable as it should be.

And the texting while driving is completely intentional, completely avoidable. Certainly should have extra penalty when a crash or damage is done while violating those laws.

OP, no issue on your frame being tweaked? I don't know if it is true, but many think that having a hitch hit, increases force directly to frame and therefore could tweak the frame.
