Smokey Yellowstone and Glacier Parks

There are no forest fires in Yellowstone yet. It’s been a wet year and things were green until a few weeks ago. The air quality here is BAD. A few days back we could hardly see Mt. Washburn and that’s 12 miles away. Two weeks ago we had a long electrical storm and we thought for sure there would be a fire but it didn’t happen.
The folks coming back from Glacier say that it is very bad there. The last word from Glacier is that the fire would burn until it snowed.
We checked with Smokey Bear to see that there are many forest fires in Western Montana all adding to the smoky conditions. SEE: http://www.smokeybear.com/wildfire-map.asp

I can’t believe that there are enough Hot-Shot teams to handle the work at hand. Heck, it may as well snow and put out the fires because it’s been in the 20’s several nights.

The 1st photo is in Paradise Valley at 9:30am and that is the sun in the upper left. The wind blew hard from the South all day but did little to move off the smoke. The last is on Dunraven Pass; the burnt trees remain from the '88 fires.

We are at Canyon Village working in the Visitor Center YA Store. We pull out sometime in October.
If you pull in from Gardiner you will either have to travel over Dunraven Pass or content with nasty road construction on the Norris Road.
We pulled through the construction and it was BAD.. NEVER AGAIN will I put the Cruiser through that mess.

Thanks for road condition report. Will try to get over there. At least traffic shouldn't be too bad after Labor Day, maybe!!!!!

Wow - was there in 2013 (Yellowstone and Glacier) - didn't think the fires would be that bad so soon.

1st YNP forest fire of the 2015 season.

There is now a small forest fire burning on the south end of Yellowstone Lake. It is thought to have been started by lightening and is under 5 acres in size.

Yellowstone 2015

A week ago we had 2-3 days of rain and snow after which the smoke column from the Spruce Fire was no more. The air has been clear and the weather nice, brisk mornings often in the high 20's but warm afternoons.

Things are drying out again and today it was windy bringing life back to the Spruce Fire. Again it is traveling Northward toward an old burn and should run out of fuel then.

Here is a photo from weeks past of the Spruce Fire from Hayden Valley .
