I recently stumbled across an article (somewhere) on the internet talking about the awning coming "unfurled" while driving down the road. Has anyone had this happen, or were they probably just trying to sell something?

My Mom & Dads motorhome did once couldn't figure out why. We always thought people were UN-locking the roll out lever but some how it does happen.

I haven't had it happen to me but have seen it happening to other campers while traveling.

I wonder if that's even possible with all the electronic ones being put on campers? My new Forester has an electric awning and unless the motor engages I can't see it opening on it's own.

When we had a manual awning I used the straps below around each arm before we left for a trip. If it did come unlocked for some reason these would keep the arms from going out.

It is the tube the awning is rolled up on the spring breaks the awning rolls out. It is not the arms that come out. That is why people put a lock on the awning tube.

We use small bungies on the arms as high up as I can reach. They're cheap, so we replace them every season. Been doing that for years. Never had a problem. There are kits available to lock the fabric down, but we've never used them. In 25+ years of RVing, we've only personally seen one case where the awning came apart on the road. And the whole trailer looked kinda raggedy.

I have never heard of it either, but that article got my attention since I will be making the big trip (WA to FL) next month. I like, and think I will use the bungie cord idea.

Yep....add one more for the cheap bungie cord wrap. You can never be too safe....

If the rewindind spring brakes the tube un-rolls(the arms stay lock in).Now I think I remember the "Ol' Man" saying the spring broke.
