Axle Weight issues.

Be careful to research the axle weights of Crossroad's axles. We own a 2011 Sunset Trail 31KS. This camper has a 6,000 lb dry weight with two 3500# axles. We have less than 500 miles on this camper and already had an axle failure. We are now changing out both axles for 6,000 lb Dexter axles. Please beware!!! This is a serious danger. I do love my camper, but these axles are just not enough. If I had this to do again, I would ask them to be upgraded before I even purchase.

Is 6000 your actual weight ? or the rated weight?

Surprising,
in that the pin weight is on the tow vehicle not on your trailer axles...

so 7000 minus 6000 minus tongue weight should be easily handled by the axles...

12k of axles is WAY overkill for a 6k trailer IMHO

This is a travel trailer, not a fifth wheel.

Shouldn't matter. 10-15% of weight is on tongue.

I agree - twin 3500# axles should be more than sufficient. By installing dual 6000# axles, I would think they would be too heavy duty.

Looked it up and GVWR is about 7400#. Original axles should be more than enough.

I think whats happening with these axles, is they might be rating them differently then they use to.
I agree that what the OPs axles are rated for should be sufficient.
But, they probably aren't rating them to what the pounding is they get when bouncing down our wonderful roads.
It just seems like the tubes are getting thinner sidewalls all the time.

Many, many instances of the crappy Lippert axles not being able to handle their rating. 2 3500# axles should be adequate for that unit, unfortunately the inferior quality of these axles doesn't make it so. I replaced mine with another set of 3500# axles and haven't had a problem since.

Seems funny that all new 26 -31f'ters have 4400# axles now. mine came with 3500 and had them swapped for 4400# after they failed in 2 weeks. And not overloaded.

All I really know is that I had less than 500 miles on the axles and one failed and the other looks to be tweaked now. As for the message, it was truly in direct relation to the stock Lippert axles being unsafe.

Sadly, quality is an issue all around. Long ago are the days when you didn't wonder if the axles are going to hold up, much less anything mechanical/electrical.
