Bad Converter???

We recently purchased our 2007 Cruiser CF30QB. I have been having a problem with the electric and my battery. Before I had the camper hooked up to shore power, I could not keep the battery charged. I installed a batteryshut off, and still killed the battery. I installed a 30 a plug from my garage and have the camper hookedup. I still can not keep the battery charged and when plugged in, I have no 12V I can't run anything that is on 12V. Everything is ok until the battery dies (which is very quick). Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't I be able to run everything even without the battery installed when I'm hooked up to shore power.



The battery I was using was brand new.



I assume my converter is bad. Is there anyway to confirm this before I shell out the money to replace it.

You should have 12v power when plugged into shore power even with no battery. Disconnect the battery then plug into shore power and check to see if you have charging voltage (13 to 14v) on the battery leads from the charger. If not, see if you have a tripped circuit breaker supplying a-c to the converter.

Are you sure your battery is good? I have found many weird things happen with a defunct battery.

Boy do I feel stupid, I found that both the 40 amp fuses were blown. Replaced them and it is running fine. However this poses a new question. The converter fan is running constant. Will that always run, or does it stop after batteries are charged. Kind of loud. Thanks again.

The fan will run as long as it is charging. If the battery is low it will run fast and gradually slow down as the battery reaches full charge. Also, if you have lots of 12v items on, the more you have on the faster the fan runs (and louder).

Blowing the 40 amp fuses is weird. They are there primaraly to stop a polarity switch on the battery (mistakenly swaping the neg and positive from the converter to the battery).

The fan on my converter ran all the time and it was defective. They ended up replacing the converter under warranty. Just to be clear, my problem was that my fan would run anytime I was connected to shore power--even if the battery was disconnected. The converter fan runs based on the amount of current that is in demand -- the more demand, the faster the fan runs.



For further diagnosis, try this:

1. Disconnect from shore power and disconnect battery

2. Remove 40 amp fuses

3. Connect to shore power

4. If the fan runs, the converter is defective. If fan doesn't run, it ok and the issue is with the battery or an "unexpected" draw from somewhere.
