Battery burps

We have a thread going on toilet burps so here is another burp.

The other day I was topping off the batteries in the camper and they burped back at me. I have never had that happen before. Has anyone else?
Do any of you battery geeks have any answers?

The lead plates in the batteries will bubble as they charge and discharge (which is what releases the hydrogen gas, thus the explosive warnings on batteries) and those bubbles will merge and grow releasing them from the plates. The end result as they break surface is they occasionally burb.

Not a bad idea to pop off the caps and let the hydro gas escape easily rather then hoping the cap vent works well enough and building up pressure, hence the burp.
