Bearing grease

What is your preferred trailer wheel bearing grease? And how difficult is it to repack the bearings? Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.

Myself, I really don't think it makes much, if any difference on lubricants now days.
I'm not fussy on brand. I suggest you have a new set of grease seals to put in. The old ones will be destroyed when you knock out the inner bearing.
If you crawl under the trailer and look at the axle you should see a tag stating what the axle is rated for in #. With that info you should be able to get the correct seals, and bearings, if you need them from etrailer.

Clean up the old ones and inspect them for any problems.

Remember---keep everything CLEAN.

Don't use chassis grease. I always buy grease certified as "high-temp". This has better viscosity ratings to tolerate higher temperatures. You can buy bearing packing "cones" but doing it in you hand is relatively easy albeit messy.

I use "wheel bearing " grease from Wal-Mart I believe its Valvoline brand.. The brand is not as important as long as it says "wheel bearing" on it. You want a high temp grease.

I use Lucas Marine Grease. Fairly inexpensive and available at my local Advance Auto.

I use Mystic high temperature all purpose grease for the wheel bearings and the suspension wet bolts. I also use a bench top cone shaped wheel bearing packer, there is less mess and you are assured that the bearings are properly packed.

I use Amsoil grease for bearings. If I didn’t use Amsoil, I would likely use Lucas Red and Tacky. I also use a bearing packer tool.

Is there a secret to getting the seal and inner bearing out?

I use the wooden handle of a ball been hammer and tap it out. Some use a curved pick like device to pull out the seal.

You can screw the nut back onto the axle after removing the front bearing. Then when pulling the wheel off the axle the back bearing and seal will come out of the wheel hub and be resting on the axle. This will definitely ruin the seal though (but it should be replaced anyway).

Thanks everyone, I hope I am done. 3 trips to 3 different parts stores, a whole roll of paper towels, and lots of grease. Time to eat the chicken and bacon I had in the smoker since I started. I hope I don't need to do this again.

Well let me know when you do yours and I will drive nort of the cheddar curtain to watch a pro. I can see the real way to do it, probably be worth the 6 hour drive.

I have always used the red tacky type.
