Bike Racks

Want to start carrying bikes this season. I am concerned about bolting the bike rack to the rear bumper. Has anyone experienced any problems with a bolt on solution.

easy way is to put bike rack into search on the top.
But here is what I did and bikes do not wiggle one bit .

I would advise you to look at the welds that hold the bumper to the frame...If they look to be good it should be fine...

I just last year added the Mount-n-lock supports to my fifth wheel bumper to strengthening it. This is supposed to add 400 Lbs of carrying capacity to your bumper after adding these braces. I was hesitant at first but after purchasing them and installing them I was really impressed. They also sell a 2” receiver that locks onto the bumper; not bolted, it locks together and it’s solid. I also got the 2” receiver. Here’s the YouTube link to watch. https://youtu.be/W7Ys33KTxHg. And here’s the place where I ordered mine. https://mount-n-lock.com/

The best bike racks are found at Arvika.com They are found in Quebec. Give them a call and ask for Guy. And yes, he does speak perfect English. He will ask you basic questions to find the right product(s) for your application. The rack you get there will be well designed and will be strong and very well built.

IMHO the flimsy bumpers were designed to hold your sewer hose & doesn't do a very good job of that, once rusted it rubs holes in your hose, so I wouldn't attach anything to it without having it beefed up considerably.

Agreed about the flimsy bumpers. Arvika.com would never attach to the bumper. That is one of the things that places them above the common racks out there. The bike rack that I currently use for my 5th wheel is on the front of the trailer and supported via the pin box. On the tt that I previously had, the attachment was also on the front via the A-frame at the front of the frame. Both have been great- well designed, flexible in application and super strong. Go to arvika. com or maybe it is .ca as they are a Canadian company based in Quebec. Talk to Guy there and he will direct you to the best product for your purpose. They have many choices. Arvika is not cheap, but a cheap bike rack is not what you need.

Have sunset rb. Took spare off, placed in back of truck. less weight. checked welds, mounted hitch adapter, holds bikes ok. More stable to use rack that bikes sit on, not hang. Hanging rack allows too much bounce.

If you look at my pic earlier , for the cost of 2or 4 eye screws and a rachet strap added to the good welds , there is no bounce. I also now have a "sit on"bike rack and straps are still needed. At least for piece of mind as we cannot see what happens behind the trailer.

bike rack

Good point, gonna use screws. It seems very stable, but not being able to see them makes me nervous.

Thank you.

Thanks for all of the input. I decided to add braces on the bumper. A local welding shop took care of that for $50, Going to hang a rack off the bumper. The rack is the type where the bikes sit in cradles. Found one made in Missouri at local bike shop. Also wanted to be able to use the rack on the tow vehicle.

I'll let the group know how well this works out. Again thanks for all the comments.

Can you please post pictures of this setup? I'm interested in what reinforcement was added.

My father has lost more bikes with factory bumper.
-get you bumper built as it would be requiring to pull a second unit.

basically something strong enough to pull a boat. The bouncing alone will twist and destroy most bumpers currently installed on RV's.

The clamp on mounts will twist your bumper and make it impossible to get your hose out. weld on receivers will crack and pull from bumper. The only way is to add a cross member ahead of bumper and weld to both bumper and crossmember. This is the only way I have seen not break away or sag/twist.

But it also depends on road conditions, if you can keep them from bouncing.
Roads here should not even be driven on. They are terrible.

Thanks. My current plan is to bolt a Curt 13703 adjustable hitch to the frame as well as beefing up the rear 2' of the frame to better accommodate/distribute the load. I've got the hitch, but still in the planning phase on everything else. Also, my spare tire will be relocated to under the frame in front of the wheels to take that additional load off the rear.

The Zinger ZR18BH has a pretty light duty frame.
