I have a 2011 Crossroads 21FD and the control panel tells me the black tank is 1/3 full when it's empty, so I can't trust the reading at any level. Does anyone know how to fix/repair this issue?

Our black tank has shown 1/3 full for the last two years even empty. I have tried everything I can short of pulling the tank (which I will not do) and nothing works to clear it. I pretty much just dump it every couple of days rather it needs it or not.

Invest in a long tank sprayer. Ours read FULL all the time until the final cleaning at the end of the season - it now reads EMPTY. Look at your tank if you can so you know where sensors are and you can aim to spray them directly!

I remember reading some place about replacing your present sensors with something else. Maybe it's an electronic gismo. In fact I think I posted on it and Larry D. replied and said when he started having trouble with his, he would probably go with that.
Maybe he will catch this and chime in.

The SeeLevel units work very well. This may be what we install on our next unit.

Mine reads the same and fill at a normal rate as I think it should except when it reads full I have another day left if I am at someplace without sewer hook ups. It seems like a common problem.

I pretty much have stopped looking at those levels. It IS somewhat accurate at the full level but not much else. I won a set of Horst Miracle Probes that are sitting in the RV unused. These are "supposed" to be very accurate and clog free. A dealer wanted $300 to install the probes to which a prompt "NO THANKS!" was spoken.

FWIW, when my gauge reads anything other than empty when I know it is, I fill it a 1/3 full with water and a bag or 2 of ice cubes. Then head out on the road. Sometimes, some 'stuff' gets stuck on the sensors--the ice will knock it off. It may solve your problem for now....

Matt is right. I too have used the bags of ice trick & it cleared up my sensors & cleaned out the tank, while traveling to the next camp spot. Keith I'll be ready for your next leak, ol' Rally Master.Edited by: FFFord

I echo the ice cube treatment. Just make sure you put enough cubes in and that you have enough water. You can also add some Lestoil to the tank, it cuts grease good and will do a good job on that gunk stuck to the side walls of your tank. Be careful of the foam when you flush, <grin>

When my black tank sensor reads anything but empty when it should, that is telling me I'm not done rinsing it out. After a few rinse cycles, and when the sensor reads empty, I know the tank is ready for the next journey.

The problem with the tank is that the toilet paper get stock on thesensor and it throw the sensor off.

Every now and then I will fill the black tank about 1/3, and a bunch of ice cubes. Also a healthy dose of dish soap. Then travel to our next campsite, and dump when we get there. Has worked well for me so far.

Don't forget to add some liquid water softner. Just like your soft water athome, when you add soap every thing gets real slick. When the inside of you tank gets real slick, things don't stick to it!!! I don't use ice, it melts before you move 5 feet anyway.

I've been using DAWN with HawaiianPineapple Scent and IT makes the POOP smell BETTER on the way out Just make sure you do a good rinsing .

The FIRST camper I had years ago had no SENSORS !! you just open the trap and look down with a flashlight AND YOU CAN TELL QUICK .LOL UGGKEY NASTY But that was the only was to tell when you needed to head for the gate to dump .

ANYONE remember the good OLD days ???

Do a search on the "Geo Method" that's been posted somewhere on here...if you can't find it PM me and I'll send it to you I have it in PDF format...it uses a little fabric softener, a little dish detergent and I beleive a little bleach and supposed to keep the walls soft and slick....try that once the tank is emptied...put in 10 gallons or so of water the geo stuff on your next trip out...then dump it when you get to your next site...when you search for it you will see some like Hunter 11 say they've been doing it for years and never had problems...so seems like it may be a good way to go.

good luck

x2 on this. Jus tmake sure any kind of previous chemical in your holding tank is long gone before putting any bleach in there (don't ask me how I know what bad thingscan happen if the 2 mix). I do the geo method and it works better than anything else. It make take a couple of trips to get you there but it will work. You can combine this with the ice method.
