Wow, what a conversation!! I have made my living in the TV business for 30 years until nobody fixed them any more. I put in cable distribution systems in homes and apartment buildings. I never heard of turning off AGC or reversing it because of the temperature anywhere. AGC stands for Automatic Gain Control folks. The output of a TV amplifier just isn't enough to burn out anything but it can over drive the AGC circuits, cause pulling and tearing at the sides of the picture and a dark picture. But, burn out the input to a tuner; I doubt it. Now, as a ham radio operator and also a technician fixing stereo amps, now - that's another issue where amplifier outputs can do damage and be damaged by incompatible connections. Most cable systems put out analog signals so having the TV look for digital could limit the amount of channels you get. The most likely problem is the TV is set for Antenna when it should be looking for Cable channels.
