Caulking issues

What is the best way to remove the large amount of factory caulking on my roof vents? I have leak in the shower and would like to re-caulk the skylight.
I am concerned about chemical cleaners and sharp tools. I don't want to accidentally puncture the roof membrane.

I used a plastic putty scraper. Last summer when it was warm out. Came up fairly easy. Maybe using a hairdryer might help soften it up.

mostly you can just put the self leveling lap sealant right over the top of what's there. just clean with mild soap and water and seal. the new lap sealant will fill in the cracks and voids and give you a great seal without removing the old, unless the old sealant is pealing up, then just remove what's loose and seal as above.

When I replaced the overhead vent in the bathroom, I used a plastic putty knife. It took the most of it off quite easily. It works best on a warm day in the sunshine.
I then cleaned the area good with 70% denatured alcohol, and put the new self leveling dicor on.
Some use paint thinner for cleaning, I prefer the denatured alcohol, it evaporates better/faster.
