ceiling damage

We have been getting damage to the ceiling in our trailer whenever we travel. Below is a picture. You can see the slide trim in the background.

We had it covered up at the factory by use of a wide batten. The damage happened again. The dealer replaced the batten.

We cannot imagine how it happens, because the pointy part of the slide trim is a good 8 inches past the damage when the slide is in.

We thought maybe it was happening during the putting in or putting out of the slide, especially if we were not level (like a stop along the road), so we were very careful to make sure the unit was level before putting the slide in and out.

So this past weekend, after being very careful about this, even having someone watch the slide go in and out and making sure it didn't hit, the batten got damaged again.

We are at a loss to determine the cause. We are almost at the point of having some stainless steel attached to the ceiling to prevent the damage, since we are unable to figure out how else to prevent it.

Does anyone have any ideas, or has this happened to anyone else?

Just a suggestion, is there a pine cone or something else on top of your slide that may be hitting?

No, it appears to be the trim on the top of the slide causing the issue. We just don't know how.

The funny part is that the trim at that end of the slide kept coming loose for the first couple of years we had the trailer and my husband kept gluing/nailing/stapling it back on. Finally this spring he licked that problem, the slide trim is staying put. Now it's damaging the ceiling! It's almost like we were better off when it was loose.

The reason the trim came loose in the first place is because when the unit was built, a staple holding the trim on was put in the wrong way and caused the trim to split and come off. We actually had the trim replaced at the factory in 2014. That trim kept coming off until my husband got it to stop happening.

Is it possible the slide is "bouncing" when traveling?

We thought of this, but it would have to bounce out from the trailer about 8 inches for the pointy part to hit where the damage is. I think if it did that, we would notice it in the rear view mirror. We are considering having one of us ride in the trailer to watch it for a bit during transit.

I was going to suggest that, on a back country road and hit a few bumps. You could also try lifting up on the bottom corner of the slide when it is in, to see if it moves or flexes.

I just went out to ours and tried pushing up on the top at the corner and the slide did start to tilt up. I didn't push to hard, so it didn't lift to high, I don't want to break anything.

Can you trim off the top of the trim?? Might be the easiest solution.
Or... see if you can remove the whole trim and lower it a 1/2".

We actually thought of that, but before we do something quite that drastic, we wanted to explore other avenues first.

Get a hold of Cristian on this site and have her work on this ...this should not be happening to you..You should not have to try to figure out a problem that they should know about.

I actually just sent her a private message. I am sure she will get back to me, she is pretty dependable.

I'd slice a pool noodle down the long edge and put it on top of the trim to cushion it until you figure out the issue.

Here are some pictures we took of the ceiling damage while the slide was partially in (first picture) and then when it is all the way in. The second and third pictures are taken looking at the slide from the side as it is all the way in. Note the distance between the slide trim and the damage.

We'll give that one some thought! It would sure be interesting to find out what is causing it, however!

Loneoak, you are correct. Finding the base cause of the problem is important. It could lead to other problems in the future.

Here is an update. After private messaging with Christian, someone from Crossroads called and they are looking into the problem to see if they can determine how this is happening. They will call me back when they figure something out. So far it has them stumped.

The reason I posted it in the first place was in case this happened to someone else and they could share some information. Obviously this has not happened to anyone else!
