Crack
We are in Alaska and today after a very rough road we noticed a little crack in the side of the trailer just behind the bedroom slide. Any ideas, suggestions? Is this serious?

It's only the gel coat, only cosmetic & easily repaired when you return.

No, that crack is of great concern. It looks deep and in a very bad spot. I would do an temporary repair at the very least. Especially if you're way out there.

they are both right,
IF it's just the gelcoat, cosmetic and our redwood did it too...
IF it's indicative of a frame weld problem, then NOT good ...
only seeing if the interior frame welds are ok solves it...
(or just make sure the insurance deductible is low and drive on - I know - bad joke - good luck!)

Tape it up for now. Wait till you get to the alaska hwy between the alsaka border and Destruction bay ,yukon.. that is a long rough ,slow ride.

Similar to the crack on our Rushmore, but ours is on the front side of the bedroom slide.
I don't think CR is the only one with this issue. We've got a Hitchhiker on one side of us, and a new Heartland of some sort on the other side. Both have an expansion joint in the place where ours cracked. Another friend here with a Jayco just had a big crack repaired. They didn't add the joint, so my money is on it cracking again when it is towed.
I know it is frame flex, but when I really thought it over at length, there is no way you can build a 40' frame as light as these need to be that will not flex. You add a big square cut out in the middle of the solid sidewall, and it's a recipe for a crack. JMHO
Ours has not been repaired yet. Our service company is extremely busy. They just replaced our front AC Monday. Went out Friday and they would have replaced it Saturday if they could have gotten approval from our extended warranty. So I won't complain about the crack.

Tape?
If there are welds on/in the frame that are letting go, tape won't be of much help.

Although I have never traveled there, I think you take a risk of frame damage traveling up in Alaska. From what I under stand, the roads are really bad, and I think this is what contributed to the crack.
Hope you guys make out ok and keep an eye on it for the remaining time of your trip.

Yes...Tape...Keeps water out untill he ca nget to a dealer near home..I do not think he has a welder with him to fix the posibility of frame crack.

From the pic it appears to be on the backside of the bedroom slide to the water heater? IMO if it's that far back it's only cosmetic & that's a small area to take strain. I also agree that long of frame there will be flex & tape it, silicone it, whatever to keep moisture out & take care of it when you return.

No, we do not have a welder with us. Travelin Texan is right, back of the bedroom slide, near the water heater. I showed a picture of it to the guy who owns the last campground we were at (he is an RV tech), and he figures it is cosmetic, says they see it all the time, and just grinding it down and building it back up should fix it. Hubby put silicone caulking on it to keep any moisture out. We will have it looked at when we get home. I think the cause was one particular part of the road we hit which caused us to tip sideways quite a bit. The slide lock held, though.

I have to agree with Mark, for the simple reason that everyone who I have talked to about their trip to Alaska has said the same thing...That the roads are terrible.!!!
