Dometic fridge not working

Hi All - we have a 2011 ST25rb with a Dometic 6 cf fridge that wont turn on. Our battery is putting out 12.8 volts and I am connected to shore power. The "Auto" light comes on if I press the gas button but I don't want to use gas. Any ideas? It worked great on our last trip about a month ago. Thanks.

When I tested the battery, the shore power was disconnected. 12.8 volts and the battery is fairly new.

The 12 volt is only used to power the control module, the frig will not run on 12 volt only, either gas or 120 volt. If you have it set on auto, does it run on gas when power is discounted, if so you have shore power issues, if not something is haywire with the frig.

You can only choose "Auto", "Gas" or "Off". On "Auto it runs on electric unless it loses 120V power, then it switches to gas. On "Gas" it only runs on gas. 12V only controls the gas igniter. Double check your "Auto/Gas" switch. I believe "IN" is "Auto" and "OUT" is "Gas".

Thanks Rick. It won't run in "Auto" with shore power connected. It never gets cold or even cool. I've never run the fridge on gas since we always camp where there is AC service.

Open the door, and look in the back, there is a little metal piece that slides up and down on a fin. Make sure this has nor been knocked off, if it is there try moving it downward this will increase the cooling

Check that you are getting 120v at the frig outlet. If not check GFI's.

What you are telling me does not make sense. The only way it will run on AC is in "Auto". The only other setting is "Gas". So - if it does not cool on "Auto" when you are connected to shore power then it is cooling with gas only because you are setting the button to "Gas" and there may be a problem with your cooling unit. I suggest having it checked by your dealer.

Understand, when it is set to "Auto" and it detects AC power, it will not fire the gas burner. If you are connected to AC and it is set to "Auto", and if it does not cool, it is detecting the AC and not firing the gas burner. If it cools when you turn "Auto" off, essentially setting to "Gas", your gas burner is working and cooling. The only way to absolutely prove this is to turn your propane bottles off so no gas is available. If the unit does not cool with the "Auto" off then, then you will know it is running on gas all of the time. If you turn off the propane bottles and turn it off "Auto", then a "Check" light should come on because it will be unable to light the burner.

Did you buy your trailer new?

Not that it helps with your problem, but might I recommend that you unplug the fridge or take the fuse out. We recently had some full time neighbors who had the same issue. Their fridge then caught fire and burnt the camper down to the trailer and also caught their boat on fire.

There was a recall on Dometic fridges several years ago. The dealer fixed mine. Maybe yours is one that should be repaired.

Sounds to me like the 120VAC heater element is gone. The unit senses AC, and acts accordingly. But it doesn't get cold because the electric heater element that boils the ammonia (or whatever) is burned out, like a light bulb. It would switch to gas if it thought it needed to, but it senses the shore power. As a side note, we often use gas instead of electric. To me, a flame does a faster job of boiling the liquid and producing cold than the electric element. All electric elements eventually burn out, whether they be in a light bulb, a stove top, a toaster, or in this case, a heating element.

But, why use your gas when you can heat electrically off the money you paid for the campground? (I'm cheap)

Me too, Mark. But if you can forestall the replacement of a heater element by a little use of gas (a fridge consumes only a negligible amount), then putting off that expense is also a savings.
