Too much Ecoboost Kool Aide being passed around. Salesman said it can tow 11,000 pounds. Yes, and everything you read on the 'Net is true. Only the 2014 Tundra's towing specs are true to an industry standard. Ford, Chrysler and GM make their own towing capacity numbers.

Lloyd,

I think that ANY 1/2 ton truck is no match for almost any current FW. Sure, there are new ones coming online that might make it but none I have read about so far.

Just say'n.

Art,
There are several people on here that have the new Eco-Boost and pull fifth wheels with them. I cannot personally attest to it, and I was doubtful when I saw someone with a CSS335 was using one, but if they pull it and they can make it I guess they can. I know my unit weighs 10,400 empty as delivered to me, so no way I could have done an Eco-Boost, but I think Lloyd said his unit was 8,500 or something like that empty. In that case I would think he had enough excess capacity to be well below the 11,000LB mark. And, from what I've seen he had his upgraded to the HD capacity, and I think so do the person with the CSS335. I know Lloyd has had his to CO and having been through those mountains if he says he made it with no problem then I believe him. JMHO

Travel well...no matter what you're pulling with,
Jim

He's trying to say there are industry standards out there for calculating the towing capacity of trucks. As of this time Toyota is the only one that follows them. The big three have their own way of figuring towing capacity and none are the same. That makes it difficult to compare actual numbers. Supposedly they are all going to use the industry standards at some point in the future but since they know what that's going to do to their ratings no-one wants to be the first one to jump and take the hit.

That's what I have gleaned from looking around and tells me the big three have over rated their capacity and no-one wants to be the first to publish REAL specs. YMMV

Great responses from other posters so far concreteman
Here's my two cents.

I have a 2011 F105 SuperCrew with Ecoboost, heavy duty, air springs,Weight Distributing Hitch, and heavy duty tires. Love the truck. I have to park in really tight places in the city, so this truck was an alternative to just adding a third vehicle to our household.

I did the research and found the Ecoboost is great and pulls like an Ox, but its the fact its a 1/2 ton. We towed our ultralight 7,000 miles last summer. The achilles heel of these trucks is the payload and hitch weight capacity. I,m 6,250 dry and carry 5 people and I feel I'm maxxed out once we're all packed up.

With a heavier trailer you're better off with a 3/4 regardless of make. Chevy, Dodge, and Ford make great products. The 07 and newer Toyota's I believe have higher capacities for the Tundra, but not familiar with their numbers.

Concreteman you have got a lot of both opinion and good advice. The Eco boost is a great truck properly equipped. Your rig is close to 10K lbs dry weight. Depending how you load that number will increase significantly. You have to consider what type of towing and also your long range camping plans. Continue to do you due diligence and make your decision. I personally would consider more truck. JMO. Best of luck

Thanks,

I have been looking and have found a couple dealers in kansas and oklahoma that have NEW left over 2012 model F-250 , gas engine, extended cab, 4x4 , XLT trim for between $36,000 and $40,000 . So I think im kinda leaning that way.

Check Ford web-site they currently have some incentives not sure if they apply to 2012. 2014 models are out so haggle your best deal.

Keep beating on them. I bought my 2009 just before the 2011's came out. They took $13k off the sticker and I got it for just over $36k, and it's a diesel. The dealer said Ford really wanted to get rid of it and made a heck of a deal
