Eco Boost

I know there are many members who own F-150 fords with the eco boost and towing package. I am in the process of buying and would like some input on towing with the truck. I own a 2012 305sk.
Do you have the max tow package? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Have max tow, max payload and Roadmaster Active Suspension. Tows great. Towed about 2000 miles so far and didn't have any issues.

I have the same trailer, almost. (2013). I tow with a F350 SRW. The dry weight on mine is 9400 lbs. Loaded and ready probably around 11,000-11,500, I haven't weighed it yet. I know my rear squats about 1.5"-2" when the trailer is hooked up and it is on the overloads. I wouldn't think of a smaller TV except maybe a 250.

I'm not overloaded, the rig pulls fine, and I don't care what the "Ecoboost" folks say but I wouldn't do it.

My TV weighs just over 8000 lbs empty, me, hitch, and a full tank of diesel(actual). Pulling probably 11,000 my gross is over 19,000.

Don't tow with our ecoboost (except for an occasional utility trailer), we have an F350 platinum for the big jobs,
but I can say a lot of good things about the twin turbo ecoboost in the wife's explorer sport !

smooth, fast, solid, not an issue in 12k miles, a better engine than the turbo audi Q5 we traded on it... wife likes the ford much better than the audi...

averages 20 mpg on her daily commute thru dfw traffic... but other than that

It really depends on your type of towing. We tow 5,000 to 7,000 miles a year and always see long mountain grades several times and you can't beat a diesel truck in these conditions. For any trailer with a weight over 10,000lbs you will have more control with a 3/4 or 1 ton truck with 2,000lbs more overall weight and significant capacity to spare. The weight of the tow vehicle significantly adds to the stability no matter what the towing capacity of the half ton says. If you only do short hauls, a properly optioned Ecoboost would probably do the job but you are at the limit of your vehicle. It's like guys hauling 16,500lb rigs with SRW 1 ton diesels when they should have a DRW which then adds a margin of safety.

Are your reasons fuel economy or cost? I get 20mpg empty with my F350 6.7l and average 12mpg towing my 12,200lb fifth wheel when fully loaded. Combined weight is 20,300lbs. Obviously the diesels are more expensive, but I also put 30,000 miles per year on my truck in total - already have 95,000 miles on my 2011. I realize your trailer is smaller, but I would vote for the diesel in case you upsize your trailer in the future.

According to Ford's charts, you will be overloading your truck.

My 2010 CF30SKP weighs in about 11,700 loaded.

Thanks guys,
I dont plan on towing long distance with the truck. I have a 2010 F-350 diesel that is my work truck. I plan on using it for short trips no farther then a couple hundred miles. The dealer says with the max tow package it is good to 11,000 LB.

I plan to use the truck for a daily driver and tow with it when my other truck isnt around.

Hi,

The problem is not the weight of the trailer but the weight of the King pin. My F150 SuperCrew has a payload of 2200# with the HD package and my little FW has a weight of close to 1600# fully loaded. My dry weight King pin is 1200# so, imagine yours with a 1900# dry on the King pin....

Since you plan on using truck for a daily driver, maybe an F250 is the answer. I know a few with Eco's and they love them, but you will likely feel want for more truck since you tow with your work 350.

I agree with Cliff, too. you will really be pushing it for the Eco. We are considering an F150, but our dry weight is only 6800#. I figure 8000# for our trailer (loaded), and I still lean more towards an F250. With what trucks cost now, I don't want to spend 30K and wish I'd bought a bigger truck.

I agree it is a lot of king pin - hitch weight a challenge to your max payload. Use that F350 and it is a non issue.

You're not listening. Your dealer says it will tow 11,000 lbs (he also wants to sell a truck). Fine, I'm betting your trailer is over 11,000 lbs loaded and ready to go camping. Remember I have the same trailer. #2; my last trailer, CF285RL, had abt 2200 lbs hitch weight. I haven't weighed this one, CF305SK, but it's heavier on the hitch.

You have the trailer. Load it up to go camping and weigh it before buying the 150. You might get an eyeopener.

I don't know what your rig weighs for sure, but from what I have read you will more then likely be over weight.
I put everything that was offered on mine that would increase the payload, and I don't think I would want to haul your rig. I pulled onto the scales with a full tank of gas, the 5th wheel hitch, and myself. It weighed in at 6400#. If I remember right, the curb weight from the factory was some where around 5600#--5800#. That being said, I'm happy with my Eco Boost. It handled our rig just fine on out trip to CO. last fall. I didn't see any lack of power what so ever.
As far as any of them blowing up, I haven't heard about any.
Gas mileage will vary quite a bit on any vehicle from winter to summer. I figure our car (Ford Focus) varies 8 to 10 mpg from winter to summer. The truck right now is getting around 18 mpg. In the summer I've seen 22.5 mpg. Diesel is 75 cents a gallon more in my area.
Hopefully this will give a little more info to mull over.

Thanks for the input! I have been looking at some 250's. The only reason I was considering the 150 was as a daily driver it would get much better fuel mileage and ride much better.
I just had remembered that some members had 150's and were pulling fairly heavy loads. I love my 305sk so down sizing is not an option. Got off to a rocky start with it but now everything seems fine.
I have also found that there are some 2013 F-250's extendend cab 4x4's with gas engines that you can buy MUCH cheaper than a 150.

True. The Eco is a nice truck...but can be pricey. A used 3/4 ton is my planned route.

Fuel mileage?! I will be going from a 4-cyl. Hyundai Sonata to a 3/4 ton V8. Tears will be shed...

You are very correct. They are pricey. You jogged my curiosity and I looked up the window sticker on my Eco Boost and my old Duramax.

Talk about comparing apples and oranges
using a ten year old car price is not a fair comparison at all -
that would be about as fair as comparing my 100 meter dash time from 10 years ago to now

even comparing the wife's 13 explorer sport ecoboost to my 13 f350 diesel is not a fair comparison --- completely different equipment and options ...

I think my post was misunderstood.
I didn't really mean it to be a comparison.
Just showing costs of the two rigs for informational purposes only.
Sorry if there was any misunderstandings.
