I have ordered a Z-1 301bh at our sport show. I got a call today and was told the electric awning was not an option. I have not owned a camping trailer before and was wondering would this be a deal breaker for you? I have had shoulder surgery and am concerned about a manual awning.

It would depend how long ago you had the surgery, and how extensive it was. I had arthroscopic surgery done on one of my shoulders, and during the time I was healing up I wouldn't have wanted to wrestle with our awning. Some times they can be a bugger.

We are not you. Can you buy it without an awning and buy an electric one? Maybe make a deal with your dealer on the install.

My 2012 Z1 has a manual awning that is very easy to use compared to the previous design. It comes with a long hand crank like storefront awnings. You can ask if it will be the same.

Ask the dealer to swap the manual awning for an electric one. When I did that some yrs ago, the dealer gave me almost the entire cost of the manual awning as a credit against the upgrade. He said there were always people needing to repair awnings from wind damage and he would have no trouble selling the 'used' roller, fabric and arms.

If you have not signed anything as yet for the purchase I would suggest you put the electric awning as a must or the deal is not done and make them give you a deal on the install and switch over. If they are not willing to work with you then try another dealer.

I would try to get it if I could. I have one now and don't regret the work I used to do to put one up. Storm comes up...push a button. Nothing easier.

Thank you for reply's. Originally the invoice said I would have one as I asked for the upgrade. But they don't do them from the factory. I think I will hold out for it, even if it means another dealer or brand of trailer. I guess I will find out on Tuesday when I meet them again.

Dee -- Take delivery on the camper without an awning. Go to camping world and have them install an elactric awning for you.

Update: Well we met with them again today. Look over the Z1 again and tried the awning out for myself. Yes it was pretty simple and not difficult to open and close. I was still concerned what would be down the road (age 61). Yes they could put aftermarket awning on but it would be higher cost.

We look at a couple of different trailers, Sunset and Jayco. Same size and bunk arrangements.

So for about an extra $3g we went with the Jayco Swift 290bh. Power everything including stabilizer jacks, awning and trailer coupler jack. Bigger fridge, better mattresses, bigger propane tanks etc. I feel the staff there went out of there way to get us into a camper we would be happy with. So as the duck commander says.... I am happy, happy, happy! We pick up the unit on Friday
